The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) is asking shipping and maritime companies to be vigilant to the potential commercial impact that cyber-attacks can cause. IMB says that cyber security is not only about trying to identify and to prevent systems on board ships from getting hacked or âtaken overâ. âThere is also a very real danger that emails being sent to and from ships are monitored or altered. Outdated Systems Placing Vessels at Risk of Cyber-Attack
Maritime vessels are under significant threat of cyber-attack because many are carrying outdated software and were not designed with cyber security in mind, according to new research. ShipDC Launches with New Leader at the Helm
Ship Data Center Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary set up by ClassNK, has officially commenced operations of its big data center, ShipDC, from April 2016. Taking the helm as Representative Director and President of the subsidiary is ClassNKâs Information Technology Department General Manager, Takashi Nagatome. MANSA, NMIS Ink MOU for Skill Development

MHI to Revamp its Casting Operations
Effective April 1, 2015 Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) will revamp its production structure for casting products. From that date all current Group casting operations will be consolidated at the company's Futami Plant, part of its Kobe Shipyard & Machinery Works, and the existing casting plants at the Hiroshima Machinery Works and Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works (Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd.'s Nagasaki Works) will be closed down. In consolidating casting-related functions at one plant MHI looks to reduce in-house manufacturing costs and forge a robust production system capable of withstanding operational fluctuations.
Passenger ship safety recommendations agreed by IMOâs MSC
Recommended interim measures aimed at enhancing the safety of passenger ships, in the wake of the Costa Concordia incident in January, were agreed by IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC), when it met at the Organization's London Headquarters for its 90th session from 16 to 25 May 2012. Veson Nautical, provider of Maritime Enterprise Resource Planning (Maritime-ERP) solutions and services, announced that Copenhagen based Torm A/S, ranked by Tanker Operator as one of the worldâs top 30 leading carriers of refined oil products, will install version 6 of Vesonâs Integrated Maritime Operations System (IMOS). Veson Nauticalâs software will manage chartering, operations and accounting related functions for TORMâs fleet. TORMâs product tanker fleet numbers approximately 140 vessels, which vary in size from 37,000-110,000 dwt. MarAd Elects New Shipbuilding Administrator
The U.S. Maritime Administration (MarAd) named Jean McKeever as associate administrator for Shipbuilding - responsible for overseeing the Administration's naval architecture, marine engineering and productivity costs. The position, which was created in 1999, melds MarAd's main shipbuilding-related functions under one manager. McKeever has served 25 years in various financial and analytical positions, most recently as the deputy director of the agency's Office of Ship Financing. She commenced her career in MarAd's Office of Subsidy Contracts and later served as branch chief of two financial divisions - Subsidy and Capital Assets Management.
