APM Terminals Liberia Sees Economic Recovery

Addressing the US - Liberia Trade & Investment Forum in New York City, APM Terminals Liberia Managing Director George Adjei points to a 30% increase in import container traffic at Liberia’s largest port as a reason for great confidence in Liberian investment. At the US-Liberia Trade & Investment Forum held on September 16th in mid-town Manhattan, Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, Joseph N. Boakai delivered a keynote address expressing confidence in Liberia’s recovery from the consequences of last year’s Ebola virus crisis and a return to positive economic growth in the West African nation of 3.8 million. Crowley Responds to Earthquake in Haiti

In light of the earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Crowley Maritime Corporation's liner services group has temporarily suspended regularly scheduled cargo services to and from the country. This temporary suspension comes as port infrastructure damages are being assessed. The company is cooperating with and assisting U.S. government agencies including USAID, SDDC and other relief agencies with emergency shipments to the country. Crowley stands ready to ship emergency supplies and needed cargo as soon as port conditions allow. The company is evaluating how it can best deploy its wide variety of specialized marine assets to deliver humanitarian cargo and assistance to the disaster relief.

Transformations: How a Coastal Ferry Became a Mercy Ship

The red sun drifted over the deep blue of the tropical Pacific on the western horizon, washing the surrounding Guatemalan countryside with a pale rose light. To the east, against a backdrop of hazy green volcanoes, we watched the cruise ship at the far end of the harbor preparing to depart. From the bridge wing of the Caribbean Mercy, we watched her stately transit of bright lights through the harbor. As the captain made his turn toward the open sea, passing astern of our berth, we sounded our air horn in a prolonged salute: safe voyage, happy return. When their ship arrived that morning, the captain and his wife had paid a social call. He said he recognized our Mercy Ship, the Caribbean Mercy, as a Norwegian coastal ferry. He had sailed on one similar in his youth.

Lockheed Martin Acquires PAE

Lockheed Martin Corp. acquired Pacific Architects and Engineers Inc., which provides services supporting military and peacekeeping missions worldwide. Terms of the cash transaction were not disclosed. PAE of Los Angeles specializes in nation-building activities, personnel recruitment, and training and disaster relief services. It will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin’s IT services segment.
