Oil Under Ice

Helix Oil Skimmer being deployed off the USCGC HEALY.

The U.S. How did an urgent requirement to build a road to Alaska end up helping to design submarines and to recover oil spills in the Arctic ice? The Army Corps of Engineers was faced with a monumental challenge of building a highway to connect the “lower 48” to Alaska during World War II to keep America’s northernmost territory secure from invasion. SpecTec Launches AMOS Replicator

One of the main issues when dealing with remote Databases, is the replication of data from the remote site to the office site. SpecTec has always been extremely specialized in Replicating Databases, and was the first one to invent a methodology which would replicate only data which had changed, while most competitors would replicate entire data files. With time and with the advent of SQL Databases, Data Replication has become a hot issue: we needed to allocate maximum local flexibility while allowing Data integrity to be maintained.

World’s Largest Heavy Lift Hover Barge Launched

Hovertrans Inc. launched the world's largest hover barge (air-cushion barge) in the first quarter of 2006. Air-cushion technology allows oil exploration and production operators the advantage of accessing environmentally sensitive wetlands without causing any damage to the terrain. The challenge was to provide a stable oil well drilling and equipment platform in the environmentally sensitive swamp areas of Northern Suriname. The design enabled the hover barge to be assembled on a remote site at the edge of the swamp. The hover barge is 170 x 90 ft., weighs 900 gross tons with a 330 ton payload. The hover height is 4 ft. and when on hover, only exerts 1psi ground pressure. It features a 40 x 10 ft.

VTMS to Help Ensure Safe Passage for Tankers

Lockheed Martin Ocean, Radar & Sensor Systems (OR&SS) has completed final acceptance testing of its Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) in Valdez, Alaska. USCG concerns about Y2K compliance along with Prince William Sound's notoriety were equally important reasons for the initial OR&SS system to be put in place this year. The USCG plans to continue upgrading the capability of the Prince William Sound VTMS next year.

Storm Grounds Barge with 22,000 Gallons of Fuel

Foss Maritime working with federal, state and local agencies are making preparations to remove more than 22,000 gallons of diesel oil from a barge grounded near the Red Dog mine port about 90 miles northwest of Kotzebue. Foss, owner of the barge, has sent salvage and environmental experts to the site to assess the best ways to stabilize the barge and remove the diesel fuel from it. The barge went aground yesterday. The team is scheduled to arrive at the remote site later this afternoon. According to Foss, the barge is intact on the beach, despite heavy seas and stormy weather. The tug Stacey Foss was towing the barge Kivalina Tuesday morning when severe weather caused the towline to part. Winds gusting to 60 knots and seas reaching 20 feet in height pushed the barge onto the beach.
