Sen. Vitter and Ruiz de Teresa to Receive AAPA Award

U.S. Senator David Vitter (R-LA) and Mexico’s general coordinator of ports and merchant marine, Guillermo Ruiz de Teresa, have been jointly selected to receive the American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) 2015 “Port Person of the Year” award. US Discussions Target Navigation Tech

The U.S. Coast Guard, along with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will hold nationwide public discussions on navigational aid technology and how it will affect the future of America's waterways. The Future of Navigation-21st Century Waterways public listening sessions will be held in several locations across the country and will provide venues for open communications between various federal agencies and U.S. Maritime Transportation System stakeholders to discuss the joint federal agency initiative to use modern technology to support a safer, more efficient, more secure and environmentally-sound Marine Transportation System.

Infrastructure Firm Announces Projects of the Year

Infrastructure firm CG/LA Infrastructure announced the winners of its coveted Project of the Year award as voted upon by infrastructure industry insiders. “These transformative infrastructure investments are critical to our economic security and worldwide competitiveness,” CG/LA Infrastructure President and CEO Norman F. Anderson said. Project of the Year awards are given in five categories covering strategy, financing, engineering, job creation and the environment. All projects have specific business opportunities to be realized in the next three to 18 months. The winners – announced at the 5th Annual North American Strategic Infrastructure Leadership Forum at the historic Mayflower Renaissance Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Richard Steinke Receives 2011 Connie Award

More than 200 turn out to for Port of Long Beach Executive Director Honored by the Containerization & Intermodal Institute. The Connie Award was presented by the Containerization and Intermodal Institute (CII) to Richard D. Steinke, who will retire this month as executive director of the Port of Long Beach. Mr. Steinke was honored for his leadership role in developing the Port into one of the world's largest container harbors. More than 200 people attended the industry-wide dinner event held on September 21, at the Renaissance Hotel.

CII Seeks Award Nominations

The Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) will host an industry-wide Connie Award dinner on October 1 at the Renaissance Hotel in Long Beach, Ca. The event is in addition to the annual Connie Luncheon that will take place December 7 at the Newark Club in Newark, N.J. Allen Clifford, CII President and Executive VP of Mediterranean Shipping Company, said "Every year industry representatives across the U.S. have been drawn to the prestigious Connie Awards, so we will hold a Connie program on both coasts to meet the popular demand of this event. The Connie Award has gone to industry leaders throughout the U.S., and even internationally, at a single event each year on the East Coast. Mr. Clifford noted that CII is seeking nominations for both the California and NY/NJ events.

USCG, Virgina Police Enter Agreement

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Rear Adm. Sally Brice O’Hara, Commander, Fifth Coast Guard District and the Commonwealth of Virginia Governor Mark Warner will formalize an important maritime security partnership at a signing ceremony to be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Renaissance Hotel. The partnership, known as a Memorandum of Agreement, allows Coast Guard law enforcement crews and Virginia Marine Police officers to better work together to ensure the safety and security of Virginia’s waters and waterfront facilities, including those in the Port of Hampton Roads and the National Capitol Region. “We’re working across traditional agency boundaries to make America stronger in the maritime domain,” said Rear Adm. Brice O’Hara.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), MSC 76, is concluding its deliberations for implementing the International Ship & Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code with a diplomatic meeting ending on December 13.
