SevenCs Conducts Capacity Building for Montenegro

After signing a RENC membership agreement with the Institute of Hydrometeorology and Seismology Montenegro (IHMS) PRIMAR and the Norwegian Hydrographic Service team up with SevenCs for capacity building. In November 2013, IHMS signed a RENC agreement with PRIMAR. Having a motivated team, paper charts and some recent surveys, IHMS was lacking a production environment and detailed knowledge in ENC production. Funded by the Norwegian Hydrographic Service, PRIMAR was able to provide its latest member with a full ENC production environment plus training.

ENC Production Fast & Easy Way Demo at HYDRO 12

Germany's SevenCs to demonstrate Electronic Navigational Chart production & distribution at upcoming Rotterdam expo. The features of the product mainly focus on easy data production and effective validation of ENCs for Hydrographic Offices, Waterway Authorities, Ports, Pilots or Navies. With its new ENC Encryptor SevenCs is taking the usability of ENC data to the next level. Local ENC data can be safely distributed via permit protection without the need to provide data via a RENC. This way sensitive information can be protected and the use of up-to-date data is assured. During the workshop (November 12, 2012 at 15:00 in the Sun Room of the "SS ROTTERDAM") SevenCs will demonstrate the products; attendants will be given the opportunity to directly contact the SevenCs product experts.

ChartWorld “Pay as You Sail” Service Approved

Following comprehensive trials, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) has approved ChartWorld GmbH’s “Pay as You Sail” (PAYS) service to PRIMAR RENC guidelines. The new service, which does not require any additional hardware onboard, makes use of the existing navigation and communications infrastructure that is already installed on most SOLAS vessels, combined with the established FleetTracker service from Jan Herberg Engineering, to meet PRIMAR tracking and reporting requirements for PAYS. The new service will be officially launched in the first quarter of the New Year.

Norway, Brazil Sign Bilateral Agreement

The Norwegian Hydrographic Service (NHS) and the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation (DHN) of the Brazilian Navy have signed a bilateral agreement to formalize the exchange of data, services, and sharing of expertise in the field of hydrography in order to enhance international maritime safety and protection of the environment and to avoid duplication of efforts between the participants. As a result of this agreement, Brazil now becomes a member of the PRIMAR regional ENC coordinating centre (RENC) operated by the NHS and will make the Brazilian ENCs directly available through the PRIMAR ENC service. Currently the ENC coverage in the Brazilian waters consists of 94 ENC cells.

CHS Agreements with Jeppesen Marine

Jeppesen Marine signed two license agreements with the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) in May. The first is a CHS Value-Added Reseller (VAR) agreement authorizing Jeppesen Marine to integrate CHS products and updates into its own value-added products for the marine industry. The second agreement makes Jeppesen Marine an authorized dealer of official Canadian Hydrographic Service Digital Charts, including CHS Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) and BSB raster charts, and also allows Jeppesen Marine to issue CHS ENCs in type-approved SENC format. “We’re happy that our CHS products will be available through Jeppesen Marine’s global reseller network,” said CHS Dominion Hydrographer Dr. Savithri Narayanan. “Jeppesen Marine’s products are popular in the Canadian marketplace.

KMSS Receives Type Approval For MBB

Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) has received type approval for its advanced VDR (Voyage Data Recorder) the ‘Maritime Black Box’ (MBB). The first orders have already been taken for Viking Lines passenger vessels, who have been eagerly awaiting type approval of the superior VDR from KMSS. Borje Jansson, Viking Lines commented ‘the MBB from KMSS was well worth the wait, I knew that they would develop the best solution. The Replay and Evaluation Unit, which is used to replay events, can also be used as an excellent tool for training purposes, such as entry to port. Other functions that can be included in the MBB include the recording of data for reports and training, such as voyage reports, engine logs, analysis of parameters.

NHS Establishes New RENCs

The Norwegian Hydrographic Service (NHS) and the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) have decided to establish two Regional ENC Coordinating Centres (RENCs) to meet the requirements of all Cooperating Hydrographic Offices (CHOs). The Norwegian Hydrographic Service will operate the RENC using current infrastructure and services in Stavanger, Norway - operative from 1 April 2002. “The NHS RENC is based on close cooperation between European HOs (CHOs), ensuring the HOs full control and continual access to their national RENC ENC product database,” said Kjell Birkevold, department director, Norwegian Mapping Authority. The fit-for-purpose and cost effective service by the NHS in Norway will be operated with established proven technology and infrastructure already used by Primar.
