Riding the Tides: Interview with Jason Hayman, CEO, Sustainable Marine Energy

“In developing a floating system, the real challenge is dealing with the huge loads through the mooring system. To give you an idea, two of our turbines produce the same thrust as an F-35 fighter jet on full afterburner. So you take our new six-turbine platform, and that's like taking three F-35s, telling the pilots hit full throttle, and putting that on a leash.”

Harnessing the power of the tides is not for the squeamish, with the roster of trials and failures long and distinguished. Jason Hayman and his Sustainable Marine Energy crew are putting their tech to the test in one of the harshest spots on the planet, the Bay of Fundy, as his discussed with Marine Technology TV.Jason, to start, how did you come to a career in the offshore renewable energy field?I suppose my interest got piqued back in about 2003. I went to a lecture at the University of Newcastle and they had a wave energy crowd there and a tidal energy developer.

NYK to Demonstrate Tidal Energy in Singapore

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Japanese telecom giant MTI have reached an agreement to participate in a long-term demonstration of tidal energy being sponsored by MAKO Energy and Sentosa Development Corporation, which will provide the demonstration site.The demonstration will start next spring in a first-time attempt to commercialize tidal energy in Singapore.MAKO Energy is the Singapore-based subsidiary of Elemental Energy Technologies, a tidal turbine developer that has interest and expertise in the area of renewable energy solutions, particularly tidal power and its applications. Obama Announces Actions On Renewable Energy

President Barack Obama announced steps on Friday to increase the use of solar panels, boost energy efficiency in federal buildings and train more people to work in the renewable energy field. "It's the right thing to do for the planet," Obama said, standing in the outdoor lighting display section of a WalMart store that features roof-top solar panels and a charging station for electric vehicles, among other energy-saving retrofits. The president used the stop to show how major corporations have committed to increasing the generation of solar power at their facilities. Wal-Mart Stores Inc, Apple Inc , Yahoo Inc, Google Inc and Ikea were among the companies that have made such commitments.

SENER Wins Engineering Company of the Year

The engineering and technology group SENER has been awarded in The European Energy Awards 2013 as Engineering Company of the Year. The technology group has more than 5,500 professionals across 50 offices globally. SENER received this award for innovative projects such as the Gemasolar solar thermal plant. Located in Seville, Spain, this is the first commercial central tower power plant with molten salt storage system in operation in the world and also the only solar plant capable to produce electricity round the clock.

DDW: Steel cut on World’s Larges Wind Power HVDC Offshore Platform

Drydocks World said that construction has begun on DolWin beta, the world’s largest Wind Power HVDC Offshore Platform for Aibel AS, a leading service company that works within the oil, gas and renewable energy sectors. A steel cutting ceremony was organized to mark the occasion. H.H. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman and CEO of Emirates Group was the Guest of Honor at the ceremony, attended by the prominent people from Government and Private sectors.
