Interferry Conference to Spotlight Issues with Bottom Line Benefits

Trade association Interferry stages its 42nd annual conference in Split, Croatia, next month with an agenda highlighting the income and savings potential in three key areas – the customer experience, ship technologies and safety issues including cyber security. The event runs from October 7-11 and is on course for record attendance with some 300 delegates already registered among member and non-member operators and suppliers. “I think the high level of interest is a response to the pace of change in our industry,” suggests Interferry CEO Mike Corrigan.

Mainstay Lands New Vessel Contract

A designer, builder and maintainer of workboats and renewable marine energy devices has won a significant contract to construct a crew transfer vessel. Mainstay Marine Solutions, which won against international competition, will build the boat at its deep-water facility in Pembroke Dock for client Targe Towing, a Scottish-based tug owner and operator. The 15m vessel, designed by Carmarc Design, will have a maximum speed of 15 knots and capacity for two crew and 12 passengers.

Class NK Eyes Singapore Renewable Energy Facility

ClassNK has launched a feasibility study for a new marine renewable energy testing facility to be built in Singapore. The announcement was made at the 2014 Asian Clean Energy Summit held in Singapore on 28-29 October 2014. The study will pave the way for the establishment of the world’s first marine renewable energy testing facility to be located in the tropics. Demand for renewable energy has soared in recent years, fuelling high expectations for the use of marine renewable energy. Many governments around the world are already implementing policies to attract new marine renewable energy installations, and the large scale implementation of new renewable energy technologies is under consideration.

BV Close in Offshore Wind Agreement

Bureau Veritas says an innovative decision support system for the structural maintenance of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs) is close to being finalised. The initiative could result in significant cost and energy saving for all types of renewable marine energy farms. The system has been developed within the framework of Eurogia+, the Eureka cluster for low-carbon energies. OceanPower Technologies and Lockheed Martin Collaborating on Powerbuoy

Ocean Power Technologies, Inc. is pleased to announce it will collaborate with Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) in connection with OPT’s proposed commercial-scale wave power generation project at Reedsport, Oregon. Lockheed Martin will provide design, manufacturing, system integration and supply chain management expertise to enhance OPT’s PowerBuoy® technology. This builds on previous work conducted by Lockheed Martin and OPT. This collaboration follows a $2.4 million contract awarded by the US Department of Energy (DoE) to OPT as part of US Secretary of Energy Steven Chu’s initiatives announced in September 2010 to promote the development of renewable marine energy.
