Ten Crew Missing as Cargo Ship Sinks off Shanghai
Ten crew members were missing after a cargo vessel collided with another vessel in Wusongkou anchorage at Shanghai, China’s state-owned Xinhua News Agency reported, citing the Shanghai Maritime Search and Rescue Centre. Korean Ferry Captain's Detention Could Extend As Death Toll Mounts
South Korean prosecutors investigating a ferry disaster said on Sunday they would seek to extend the detention of the ship's captain and two other crew by 10 days as they tried to determine the cause of an accident that may claim more than 300 lives. The ferry, the Sewol, was on a 400-km (300-mile) voyage from Incheon to the southern holiday island of Jeju in calm weather when it turned, listed sharply and then began to sink early on Wednesday. The ship was being steered by the third mate, on her first passage helming through the waters, and the captain was not on the bridge at the time. Out of the 476 passengers and crew, 339 were pupils or teachers from a high school in Ansan, a commuter city outside Seoul.
Crewman Claims Ferry Captain "Rushed Back To Bridge"
The captain of a South Korean ferry that capsized two days ago rushed back to the bridge after it started listing severely and tried in vain to right the vessel, one of the helmsmen on the ship said on Friday. A junior officer was steering the Sewol ferry when it capsized on Wednesday, leaving 28 people officially declared dead and 268 missing, almost all of them high school students. Divers are fighting strong tides and murky waters to get to the sunken ship but hopes are fading of finding any of the missing alive. "I'm not sure where the captain was before the accident. However right after the accident, I saw him rushing back into the steering house ahead of me," said Oh Young-seok, one of the helmsmen on the ship who was off duty and resting at the time.
Log Carrier Sinks Off China
Three sailors died and four others were missing after their Cambodian-flagged log carrier sank off China's southern Fuzhou port on Thursday, rescue officials in Hong Kong said. The 3,946-ton Pamela Dream, with 19 Russian sailors aboard, sent a distress signal in the morning and 12 sailors have since been rescued by passing ships, said Captain Ravi Dewan of Hong Kong's Maritime Search & Rescue Centre. A helicopter from Taiwan and a Chinese boat were still searching the area 10 miles off the mainland for survivors, but the mission could be hampered by about 150 logs floating at sea, he said. A Lloyds dispatch said requests have been sent to ships in the area to try to retrieve the three bodies, which were sighted by the helicopter crew. - (Reuters)
Ship Collision Kills Three
Three Chinese sailors aboard a cargo ship were killed and nine others are missing following a collision with another vessel near Inchon Port of the Republic of Korea (ROK) yesterday. Five sailors were saved by press time last night, according to the China Maritime Search and Rescue Centre under the Ministry of Communications. The ROK maritime police sent 40 boats and one helicopter to search for the missing sailors after the boat sunk in the crash. The 2,972-ton cargo ship, Xinhai7, was registered in the island country of Tuvalu in the southern Pacific Ocean by Sinbei International Shipping, a Hong Kong company. It ran into a 3,980-ton Korea Gas vessel yesterday, when it was entering the port. The Korea Gas ship only sustained minor damage with all its crew reported safe.
