Maritime Distress Beacon Gains North American Approval
Orolia’s McMurdo SmartFind G8 AIS Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) has been approved by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) Canada.The world’s first EPIRB to contain both the international 406 MHz alert frequency and the localized rescue power of the Automatic Identification System (AIS), the McMurdo SmartFind G8 AIS is now ready to order for leisure and commercial maritime use across the U.S.
iPIRB: Accuracy in Locating Casualties at Sea
Scottish company develops vital new level of accuracy for locating casualties at sea. The new iPIRB, launched by MarineMTS and Telemar UK Limited locates and identifies marine casualties fast so that every effort can be concentrated on rescue and saving life. The technology was showcased (Friday 16 November) at a launch hosted by the Maritime Rescue Institute at Stonehaven, and attended by marine industry operators including Taqa Bratani, Shell, Nexen, Marathon and Total, as well as Grampian Police.
USCG Gets New Rescue Boat
Coast Guard Station Mayport, Fla., will welcome the arrival of one of the Coast Guard's newest high-tech rescue boats, the 47-foot motor life boat. Over the years the Coast Guard has been modifying its inventory with the intent to replace older vessels and aircraft with newer more technologically advanced ones. The 47-foot motor life boat brings advanced technology, which will aid in all missions of the Coast Guard including homeland security, search and rescue, law enforcement, environmental protection and recreational boating safety. The new design offers a rescue boat that is not only self-righting, but also, faster and more capable than previous motor life boats. The rescue boat promises to help save more lives than was possible with search and rescue technology of the past.
