ClassNK AIP for MARIC's Alternative Fuel Vessels

China’s First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered Passenger Catamaran Launched

China’s first hydrogen fuel cell powered boat “Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat No. 1” has been launched in Guangdong.“Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat No. 1” is a 164 foot long, 33 foot wide passenger catamaran capable of reaching a maximum speed of 17 miles/hr. It is powered by a 500 kW hydrogen fuel cell with a 1,800 kWh lithium battery system and has a range of 124 miles. MacGregor-Equipped Icebreaker for China

A MacGregor project team has been involved in the polar icebreaker Xue Long (Snow Dragon) 2 project for China’s 36th Antarctic expedition from the very early stage back in 2011MacGregor is working collaboratively with the he Polar Research Institute of China (PRIC) project team and the Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC) in Shanghai to develop different technical solutions required to enable deck handling equipment to operate effectively at temperatures of minus 45 degrees centigrade.MacGregor’s deck handling solution and scope of supply for Xue Long 2 comprises three offshore cranes, the research equipment deck handling systems, oceanographic winches, deck machinery and hatch covers.

AkzoNobel to Coat Chinese Icebreaker

Aker Arctic's Icebreaking Ships Busy

Finnish engineering company Aker Arctic Technology Oy said that its Arctic condensate tanker Boris Sokolov has now been transporting gas condensate from Sabetta to various ports in Europe for more than half a year.Last spring, Aker Arctic’s expedition team carried out full-scale ice trials on the vessel based on our Aker ARC 212 design.In order to evaluate the performance of the vessel, the fully-laden Boris Sokolov deviated from her regular route and headed towards the Siberian coast to seek ice conditions that were closer to the tanker’s maximum independent icebreaking capability. LR Joins with 6 Firms to Fuel LNG Growth

China Builds World's Largest Silent Research Vessel

The world's largest silent research vessel built by China was officially put into use, which will pave the way for the cultivation of innovative deep-sea talent and ocean science study.Built by Shanghai-based Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co., Ltd, the Dong Fang Hong 3 is the first Chinese research vessel and the world' fourth to have obtained a Silent-R certificate, the highest standard for underwater noise control issued by Norwegian international certification body, DNV GL, according to Xie Jun, chief builder of the vessel.The ship is the first one in China and fourth in the world to receive the certification, positioning the vessel at the highest international standard in terms of the underwater radiation noise control in the world.

MARIC to Use Lloyd's Register Design Software

Marine Design & Research Institute of China (MARIC), a subsidiary company of China State Shipbuilding Corporation group (CSSC), has signed a licence agreement with Lloyd's Register (LR) for use of their ShipRight FastTrack software. ShipRight FastTrack assists ship designers with the increased requirements demanded in Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Under the latest IACS and Classification Rules the scope for FEA requirements is increasing and initial structural designers need to spend more time on FEA as a result. Time savings can be made with the use of this software that can generate the qualified FE mesh model quickly from 2D/3D plans without the need for excessive and expensive human intervention.

Rapp Marine to Equip New OSU Research Vessel

Rapp Marine said it has been selected by Gulf Island Shipyard, LLC, as the Overboard Handling System Single Source Vendor (OHS SSV) for Oregon State University’s (OSU) 193 ft x 41 ft multi-mission Regional Class Research Vessel (RCRV), with the option of two additional vessels. Funding for the RCRV project is provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the contract design of the RCRV was developed by Glosten. The first vessel is currently under construction at Gulf Island Shipyard in Houma, La.

ABS, Industry Partners to Advance Autonomous Shipping

ABS joined the Unmanned Cargo Ship Development Alliance to work with industry partners, including class organizations, shipyards, equipment manufacturers and designers to advance autonomous shipping. The design will integrate features of independent decision-making, autonomous navigation, environmental perception and remote control. “Increased digitization, advanced technologies and new levels of connectivity are changing the way the maritime industry operates,” says ABS Greater China Division President Eric Kleess.

China’s New Polar Research Vessel under Construction

Construction on China’s new state-of-the-art polar research ship is underway at Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, China, with delivery scheduled for 2019. In 2012, the Polar Research Institute of China (PRIC) awarded a contract for the concept and basic design of the research icebreaker to Aker Arctic, who tailored the design for specific scientific missions in the Arctic and Antarctic. After the concept had been developed, Aker Arctic performed model tests in open water and ice at its Helsinki laboratory in order to verify the vessel’s performance.

MacGregor to Equip China’s New Polar Research Ship

The Polar Research Institute of China has ordered a new 14,300gt polar research vessel. Designed by Aker Arctic Finland, it will be the first vessel of its type to be built in China, though a shipyard has yet to be named. The 122.5-meter multifunctional icebreaker will be able to handle ice up to 1.5 meters thick, achieving a continuous icebreaking speed of two to three knots. It will have an endurance of 20,000 nautical miles and with a full 90-person crew, it will be able to cruise for 60 days without resupply.

Advanced MacGregor Technology for Polar Research Ship

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has won an order to supply MacGregor offshore cranes and a Triplex handling system for a 14,300gt polar research vessel being built for the Polar Research Institute of China. Designed by Aker Arctic Finland, it will be the first vessel of its type to be built in China; the shipyard has yet to be named. "Our ability to deliver tailor-made packages of equipment and a reputation for successful low temperature operations were key factors in winning this contract," says William Storvik, Shiptype Group Sales Manager, MacGregor Offshore Deck Machinery. "MacGregor products have a proven track record of performance in extreme environments, which makes them ideal for this type of vessel.

ABB Azipods Selected for First Chinese-built Icebreaker

ABB’s Azipod propulsion system will power a Chinese polar science research icebreaker, the first vessel of its type to be built in China. The Polar Research Institute of China ship will be fitted with two Azipod VI units with combined power of 15 MWs. Azipod features a built-in high-efficiency AC motor and fixed-pitch propeller mounted directly on the motor shaft. While mechanical thrusters have complex transmission with gears and shafts, the Azipod has only electrical cables between the power source and the electric motor.

ABS, MARIC Sign Agreement

(PRESS RELEASE) ABS signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement with Marine Design & Research Institute of China (MARIC) to expand collaboration, focusing on operational efficiency and environmental performance in both the offshore and marine sectors. ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Howard Fireman and MARIC President Wenhua Xing signed the agreement at the MARIC premises in Shanghai, China. "This Agreement aligns the core competencies of ABS and MARIC and allows us to work together on designs that meet environmental regulations and technology trends," Fireman says. Through this agreement, ABS and MARIC will collaborate on technical support, classification, certification, training and statutory guidance for merchant vessels and offshore units.

Rapp Marine Scores Two Contracts in China

Rapp Marine informs it has been chosen to supply equipment packages for two new oceanographic research vessels for the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey, GMGS, and Polar Research Institute of China, PRIC. DNV GL to Class SWS Built ULCS

DNV GL signed a newbuilding classification agreement with Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (SWS) for the classification of three 20,000 TEU ultra large container ships (ULCS) for COSCO Container Lines Co., Ltd. (COSCON). China Shipping 21,000 teu Order for SWS

China Shipping Group's CSCL has agreed a deal to bareboat charter up to 11 units of 21,000 teu containerships, of which five will be options exercisable after six months of charter for the first six ships, says local media reports. It has confirmed the 21,000 teu containerships to be built at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS). The ships will be chartered from China Shipping Nauticgreen Holdings, subsidiary of China Shipping (Group) Company. “The charter hire is determined by reference to the market freight rates for liners in the Far East and Europe trade lanes during the past five years (2010 to 2014),” CSCL said, adding that it expects to generate profits from the vessel charters.

Lomar Adds Seven Container Ships to its Fleet

Lomar Corporation, a Libra Group company, has again added to its fleet of container ships with the purchase of three vessels plus an order for up to four new buildings from the Yangzijiang Shipyard, says a company press release. The new vessels are the latest ‘widebeam’ specification with a nominal intake of 2,700 TEU and are designed by the Marine Design & Research Institute of China (MARIC). They will feature the very latest eco-fuel-efficient ‘GType’ engines which meet current emissions regulations. These ships are notable for having a very high reefer intake (600 FEU) and a higher than normal homogeneous intake of 2,300 TEU at 14 tonnes. Furthermore, the reduced overall length of the vessels makes them ideal for ports with an LOA restriction.

The melting Arctic presents a geopolitical challenge and it is the last bit of unclaimed land left on our quickly heating globe. A report in the Worldcrunch analyses why China is suddenly so interested in the Arctic. China is now becoming more involved primarily because of issues related to climate change, shipping and natural resources. China will also play an important role in exploiting the region's resources. Norway's Foreign Affairs Minister Borge Brende says China's growing economic affairs and scientific community will demand that the country become increasingly involved in issues related to the Arctic. Another reason Asian countries are paying more attention to the Arctic is because more shipping lanes could open as ice disappears.

BV to Class Largest China-Built Containerships

International classification society Bureau Veritas will class three Ultra-Large Container Ships (ULCSs) to be built for China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and chartered to French operator CMA CGM. The ships are due for delivery in 2015. The 16,000 teu vessels will be the largest container ships built in China to date. One will be built at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) yard, and the other two at Shanghai Jiangnan Changxing Heavy Industry, part of which came under the management of SWS this year.
