ABB, MTU Test VCM System Durability

VCM actuator and engine valves (Photo: ABB)

Durability field-test results of ABB’s variable valve train system, Valve Control Management (VCM), have shown unprecedented success of the technology on an MTU high speed gas engine. The successful running of each VCM actuator for 7,000 hours on an engine is an important milestone for the forthcoming serialization of this technology. Typically, a durability test for serialization lasts around 5,000 hours for large engines. VCM is an electro-hydraulic valve train system for four-stroke gas and diesel engines…

CSM Insight Launches Social Media Tracker for Cruise Lines

While many research companies aggregate and report social media data, CXMI’s unique system uses advanced social media analysis – by real people, not key word algorithms – to provide the strategic information cruise lines need. CXMI’s Social Media Tracker covers over 98% of the passenger capacity of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) members. Each cruise line can now have reliable social media measurement for the 17 cruise lines in the tracker. Cruise lines reported that January’s shipwreck had an immediate negative impact on 2012 bookings and balance sheets. While starting to normalize, this incident shows the importance of a more complete understanding of how events, positive and negative, affect passengers and potential passengers.

Sea Technology Report

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the largest independent institution of its kind in the world, recently began developing a new piston corer for retrieving sediments from the ocean floor. Once complete in 2006, the deep-water coring system will be the largest in the U.S. and among the biggest in the world. The corer’s enormous weight — 25,000 pounds — coupled with the environmental demands associated with working in water up to 20,000 ft. deep presented major technical challenges to the system required to lower the corer to the sea floor then recover it, along with its ancient sediment samples. Located in Cape Cod, Mass.…
