NorShipping 2019: A “Koselig” Event

"Koselig" is a Norwegian adjective used to describe situations that give a feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation. The NorShipping exhibition and conference, one of the largest in northern Europe, could definitely be described as koselig. Occurring in Oslo, Norway between June 4-7, 2019, the conference featured close to 1,000 exhibitors from around the world. With the prominently featured Blue Economy Hall, terms such as marine sustainability and environmental ocean awareness held the center stage at a number of the events. In true Norwegian fashion, most of the major press announcements were delivered in semi-intimate gathers with copious amounts coffee by maritime CEOs and VPs who enjoyed being called by their first names.

Op/Ed: Shiphandlers Beware

Was the closing of the Houston Ship Channel for over three days in March 2015 due to the use of Ultra Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (ULSFO)? After reviewing the testimony, and evidentiary material presented by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) regarding the 2015 Conti Peridot’s collision with the Carla Maersk, it is the authors' opinion the report fails to address significant contributing factors. The NTSB has overlooked a serious threat to vessel operations throughout the world.

DSME Denounces McKinsey Report

The report by Global consulting company McKinsey & Company that Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) is least likely to survive among the big three shipbuilding companies has brought about strong opposition from DSME. McKinsey Korea has issued its preliminary report on the state of South Korea's shipbuilding industry, and its conclusions are dire: McKinsey believes that Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering may not survive past 2020, due to a forecast negative operating margin and a liquidity shortfall reaching as much as $3 billion. "Due to the global downturn in the shipbuilding industry, it's inevitable that Korea's three shipbuilders will face harsh losses.

Subsea 7 Wins North Sea Decommissioning Work

Subsea 7 will provide decommissioning services for the second phase of Centrica’s Rose and Stamford gas field decommissioning programs, located in the southern North Sea. The project is the latest call-off contract under a partnership frame agreement signed in 2005. Subsea 7 has partnership frame agreements with several independent operators, to provide services on a long-term preferred supplier basis. This collaborative approach is helping to drive down costs and promote early engagement on a wide range of projects. Having completed phase one in 2015, phase two will focus on the safe removal and recovery of a greater number of subsea pipeline components, and the responsible management of waste disposal.

Crowley Offers LNG Training at JaxPort

Crowley Maritime Corporation recently participated as one of several Gas Technology Institute (GTI) funding collaborators to bring liquefied natural gas (LNG) awareness training to 150 stakeholders and first responders in Jacksonville. AFBO to Provide Security in Arctic Waters

State of the Arctic Council to establish a new mechanism to strengthen operational cooperation and coordination of activities at sea. This is dictated by the need to provide security in the Arctic waters. The eight countries of the Arctic Council (AC), form the Arctic Coast Guard Forum (AFBO), the chief of the press service of the US Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander (captain of the third rank), Dave French. It is a joint initiative of the countries have common interests in the Arctic. The structure will include AFBO Denmark, Iceland, Canada, Norway, Russia, Finland, Sweden and the United States. "AFBO will be focused on the operational activities of the organization, to strengthen cooperation and coordination in the Arctic sea.

Sea Harvest Invests R125m in Trawler

This year Sea Harvest celebrated 50 years since its inception and  it launched its new vessel on Quay 6 at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. Fred Robertson, the Chairman of Sea Harvest and majority shareholder Brimstone Investment Corporation was present at the vessel christening ceremony and he christened her saying: “We are gathered here to name the Harvest Atlantic Peace, may she reap a bountiful harvest and may the God keep her and her crew safe on her journeys”. The Harvest Atlantic Peace was built in Norway in the world renowned Sterkoder AS yard.

New Report Reveals World Fish Stocks Crisis

Head of international ocean conservation organization, Oceana, responds to alarming new report on the status of the world's fisheries. Andrew F. Sharpless, CEO of Oceana, issues the following statement about a new report: Status and Solutions for the World's Unassessed Fisheries. "This study finally lays to rest the question of whether or not the world's fisheries are in crisis – they are. As the authors report, more than half of the world's fisheries are in decline. And as they point out, worst hit are small scale fisheries which are critical for feeding hungry people all around the world. We believe that this report provides a clear call to action. We need to quickly put in place responsible management measures in the countries that control most of the world's wild seafood.

Arctic Risk Management Study Released by DNV & FNI

A new study about crucial risk management issues relating to Arctic operations is released by DNV and the Fridtjof Nansen Institute (FNI). The study concludes that, in order to safely develop Arctic resources, there is a need for improved technology, oil spill preparedness and close cooperation between the authorities, industry and society. DNV’s CEO, Dr Henrik O. Madsen, presented the study entitled ‘Energy and the environment – Arctic resource development, risks and responsible management’ at the Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) Conference in Stavanger. Interest in the Arctic is growing rapidly, but there is no race for resources. The Arctic is more characterised by cooperation than by conflict.

BOEM Completes Draft Environmental Review

Public Hearings scheduled for Central and Western Gulf of Mexico Lease Sales. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has completed a draft environmental impact statement regarding multiple oil and gas lease sales tentatively scheduled between 2012 and 2017 in the Western and Central Gulf of Mexico planning areas, offshore the states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The proposed Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program: 2012-2017 schedules five annual area-wide lease sales in the Western Gulf and five in the Central Gulf. “The draft environmental impact statement evaluates baseline conditions and potential environmental effects of oil and natural gas leasing, exploration, development and production in the Western and Central Gulf,” said BOEM Director Tommy P.

K-Sea Achieves ABS HSQE Certification

(East Brunswick, NJ) K-Sea Transportation Partners L.P. announced today that it has successfully completed the ABS HSQE certification process for all of its locations and operating divisions. K-Sea is the first U.S. flag tug and barge operator to achieve ABS HSQE certification, according to ABS. Petters to Lead Northrop Grumman's Newport News Sector

Northrop Grumman Corporation has elected C. Michael Petters as corporate vice president and president of the company's Newport News sector, succeeding Thomas C. retirement.
