The integrity of the marine transportation system as a key plank in a country's economic prosperity is in heightened focus today, with logistics snarls contributing to fast rising inflation. Inland waterways, sometimes called ‘nature’s superhighways’ provide a strategic advantage related to security, economics, and trade for any nation whose geography, topography, and climate enable this natural infrastructure. Economic benefits are realized in small rural areas through large urban communities that utilize the system for efficient transportation and improved markets. However, deliberate operational, resource, and policy efforts, along with broad stakeholder integration, are required to maintain and operate such a system.

Howard Fireman, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, joined the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) in 2013. Fireman is responsible for leveraging the latest advancements in technology to drive the development of innovative products and services that promote safety and improve the delivery of class services in the marine and offshore industries. Since joining ABS, Fireman has also served as President of the ABS Nautical Systems Fleet Management Software product line where he has overseen significant advancements in the software and achieved growth in every sector.

New Shipping Alliance Formed

COSCO, K Line, YangMing, Hanjin and Evergreen Line announced that the five parties have agreed in principle to establish a shipping alliance. To be operational only on the trades between Asia and Europe, including the Mediterranean region, it will be called the CKYHE Alliance. The lines intend to formally begin the new Alliance as of 1st March 2014 subject to compliance with the relevant regulations. The CKYHE will commence operations in mid April with six joint services operating between Asia and Northern Europe and four loops dedicated to the Asia-Mediterranean route. ABS Fleet Reaches Record Mark

ABS has broken through the 120m gross ton mark to establish a new all time fleet record. The classification society has benefited from the current active newbuilding market and a steady inflow of existing vessels changing class. With more than 1,400 vessels of almost 25 m gt currently on order to ABS class, the fleet is expected to grow further in the short term. The recent strong interest in new Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs), which include jack ups and semisubmersibles has also boosted the ABS orderbook. The society has maintained its dominant position as the leading provider of classification services to the offshore sector with 50 MODUs (43 jackups and 7 semisubmersibles) currently on order to ABS class at yards in Singapore…
