W&O Launches Digital Valve Management Service

(Photo: W&O Supply)

W&O Supply, a supplier of valves, actuation, pipe and fittings to the global maritime industry, is launching a digital valve management service underpinned by the use of RFID technology to identify critical valves on board. Many vessel operators lack even basic identifying information about the valves they have on board, such as type, material, age, or size and struggle to maintain a clean valve database in their ERP system to allow automatic purchasing by their teams ashore. This lack of insight increases the risks of wrong delivery of valves in case of an unexpected breakdown…

Container Tracking: Market Leader States Strategy

Gatekeeper USA, Inc. explains its marketplace and its innovation in container tracking and security. Containers account for 95% of U.S. import-export shipboard cargo. It is estimated there are 200 million shipboard trips annually among seaports around the world. The market is expanding at a rate of 10% annually. Nearly 90% of the world's manufactured goods are moved by containers. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is the current standard, but must be placed within 30 meters of a reader device to be effective. The Gatekeeper Security Device is claimed to be 10 years ahead of RFID technology development. The company's security device is an affordable…

DHS System of Records – US-VISIT RFID Tags

The Department of Homeland Security issued a Notice stating that it is establishing a Privacy Act system of records entitled the Automated Identification Management System (AIDMS). The AIDMS consists of the reports from radio frequency identification (RFID) tags that will be issued to aliens traveling to the United States. The RFID tag will be linked to biographic and/or biometric data for that traveler. The RFID tag will then be used by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at land border Ports of Entry (POE) to verify the identity of the traveler and track entries and exits. This new program is not directly related to the maritime community, except for foreign mariners that might be joining or departing a vessel in the United States.

APL Introduces RFID

APL - the global container shipping line - introduced active RFID technology to its Southern California marine terminal in an important innovation that will speed up cargo container processing. By introducing Real Time Locating System technology at its Global Gateway South (GGS) terminal, APL can reduce by as much as half a day or more the amount of time it takes to track a container in the yard and prepare it for transport. This not only improves terminal efficiency but, more importantly, helps improve on-time cargo delivery to customers. The innovation at GGS comes hard on the heels of the launch last week of an RFID test centre in Singapore - an initiative by NOL in partnership with Sun-Microsystems designed to evaluate RFID applications in a 'live' supply-chain environment.

Blue Ocean Wireless Partners with Stratos

Blue Ocean Wireless (BOW), an Irish company focused on delivering GSM communication capability for the merchant maritime sector, has reached an agreement to partner with Stratos Global Corporation (SGB), a provider of advanced mobile and fixed-site remote communications solutions, to provide Inmarsat satellite services to BOW’s merchant maritime customer base on a non-exclusive basis. The agreement follows successful trials of the BOW offering on board two container vessels conducted in late 2006 by Blue Ocean Wireless, Stratos and Inmarsat. Blue Ocean Wireless will, together with Inmarsat, Stratos and a GSM network operator, provide a global GSM service for crew members of merchant ships.

RFID Tracking for US Visitors

In an experiment, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is deploying radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to track immigrants entering and exiting the country, according to a Hindu Business Line report. The RFID is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders. Beginning July 31, the experiment applies to people without green cards entering the US with a visa to work, study or tour. Over the next year, people in these categories will be issued new "I-94" visa cards embedded with an RFID tag at five border crossings of Nogales East and Nogales West in Arizona, Alexandria Bay in New York, and the Pacific Highway and Peace Arch in Washington.

Savi Technology and Oneseal to Develop Revolutionary Electronic Bolt Seal

Savi Technology announced at today's opening of the U.S. Maritime Security Expo in New York that they will jointly develop and market a disposable low-cost electronic bolt seal that automatically transmits alerts over radio frequencies when locking mechanisms on cargo containers are tampered with or violated. The new electronic seal will combine EchoPoint, Savi's latest, sixth-generation, active radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, with OneSeal's design and manufacturing skills for high-security locks. The partners plan to introduce a widely affordable product by early next year that will dramatically improve the security and management of cargo containers moving throughout the global supply chain by ship, rail and truck.
