Singapore-based Enterprize Energy and partner Renewable Energy Global Solutions (REGS), together with PetroVietnam consortium comprising Petroleum Equipment Assembly & Metal Structure (PVC-MS) and VietSovPetro (VSP), MHI-Vestas Offshore Wind (MVOW), and DNV GL signed a series of exclusive Agreements forming an alliance for multi-phased, utility-scale wind developments, offshore Southern Vietnam, including feasibility, environmental, development, financing planning through implementation. Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc visited Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT) on July 21st, becoming the first container terminal in the Cai Mep area, part of Saigon Port, to receive the Vietnamese Head of State. CMIT is a joint venture between APM Terminals, which holds a 49% share, Vietnam National Shipping Lines, with a 36% share, and Saigon Port, with a 15% share. Prime Minister Phuc was welcomed by CMIT acting Managing director Nguyen Xuan Ky, who expressed the facility’s appreciation to the Vietnamese national and provincial governments, and the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport for supporting policies which have led to the success of the deep-water port complex.

International engineering and project management consultancy Royal HaskoningDHV has celebrated the opening of its new office in Vietnam in a ceremony which also marked 30 years of operations in the country. The event was attended by Mr Simon van der Burg, Dutch Consul General in Vietnam together with representatives from Royal HaskoningDHV including Mr Erik Oostwegel, Chairman, Ms Jaska de Bakker, CFO and Mr Lars Crombach, Managing Director in Vietnam. The opening of Royal HaskoningDHV’s new office in Ho Chi Minh City underlines the company’s strong growth in Vietnam. The company, which has offices in Ho Chi Minh City and in Hanoi, has relocated from its previous premises in the economic centre of Vietnam to a larger, modern building in a new business district.

The deep-river port complex in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau is still struggling to reach its designed capacity, says local media reports. The seven deep-water seaports have been built by the Cai Mep – Thi Vai Port Group in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau in the past few years at a total cost of VND40 trillion (nearly US$1.8 billion). Statistics from the province's transport department showed that a total of 1.16 million TEUs were handled at Cai Mep-Thi Vai last year, or just 17 percent of its capacity, even after freight growth averaged 20 percent a year, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported on Thursday. Vietnamese authorities have concluded that a collision between a Singaporean container ship and a local fishing boat that killed eight people in September, 2013, was caused by the negligence of the ship’s second mate, reports Thanhnien News. After announcing its findings, the Vietnam Maritime Administration handed them over to police in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau, where the accident took place, for further investigation. On September 16, 2013, Sima Sapphire collided with the boat with 16 fishermen on board, which sank some 54 nautical miles off the coast of Vung Tau. The crew managed to rescue 8 of them but the others were lost.

Cai Mep-Thi Vai international port in the coastal southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau inaugurated. The ship APL Alexandrite became the first linehaul container vessel to call at the Saigon Port-PSA (SP-PSA) deepwater container terminal located on the Cai Mep river in Ba Ria Vung Tau Province in southern Vietnam. The 3,821 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) vessel was undertaking a trial voyage ahead of the beginning on 4 June of the industry’s first direct container shipping service linking Vietnam and the West Coast of North America. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has announced plans to offer direct service from Vietnam to the US West Coast. The company’s Pacific Southwest Express (PSX) service will begin calling on Cai Mep in South Vietnam effective June 4, 2009. The MOL operated PSX service will call at Tan Cang Cai Mep Terminal, located approximately 50 km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, in the province of Ba Ria Vung Tau. The PSX service will provide comprehensive coverage of the Pacific Southwest with calls at the ports of Los Angeles and Oakland.

Western Australian shipbuilder Strategic Marine officially opened its $16.3m (USD) shipyard in Vietnam on February 24, demonstrating that the company is confident it can ride out the current global economic turmoil. Strategic Marine Chairman Mark Newbold told several hundred dignitaries and guests attending the grand opening that the Vietnamese yard had already won more than $61.8m in orders. Newbold said with three other yards in Australia, Singapore and Mexico, the company was currently constructing 63 fully-financed vessels with an order book value of $164.2m…

Australian shipbuilder Strategic Marine has broken new ground by winning a contract to build a 23.9m new generation compact tug – the first tugboat signing in the company’s history. The vessel, which has a 60 ton bollard pull, has been ordered by the of – another breakthrough since the Port becomes Strategic Marine’s first client. The steel vessel, which will have a deadweight of 105 tons and a free-running speed of 12 knots, will be powered by a Voith Water Tractor. These propulsion systems have become a byword for safety, reliability and precision in ship-handling and escort applications, with 800 Voith tugs currently operating in 120 ports worldwide.

Strategic Marine reported that it will open its first shipyard in the Americas in early 2008 following a joint venture bid with Servicios Navales E Industriales S.A. DE C.V. (SENI) to build two 52m aluminum crew boats for Arrendadora Ocean Mexicana S.A. de CV (Blue Marine Offshore) in Mexico. Strategic Marine already operates yards at its Henderson headquarters in Western Australia, Tuas in Singapore and Dong Xuyen Industrial Zone, Ba-Ria Vung Tau in southern Vietnam. The $11.9m contract will see the two vessels operated by Blue Marine Offshore for its Pemex contract in the Gulf of Mexico. Work on the contract is scheduled to commence this year, before which Strategic will work with SENI to upgrade its existing maintenance facility at Mazatlan on the Mexican west coast.

Two tankers were able to stop the drilling rig Roger W. Mowell, leased by Malaysia's Petronas and Vietnam's Oil and Gas Exploration and Exploitation Co., which had been drifting in the South China Sea since the weekend, rescue officials and industry sources said. The rig reportedly broke away from two accompanying tankers in heavy weather Aug. 19 as it was being moved to Vietnam's Ruby oilfield. It started drifting east toward the Spratly Islands. The tankers are pulling the rig back toward Vietnam's southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, where it is expected to arrive for inspection early next week. Nearly 40 crew members were taken off the rig safely on Aug. 20.

A company official said Vinalines would continue to invest in building new seaports in Dinh Vu, off the northern port city of Hai Phong, in Quang Ninh Province; Hiep Phuoc in HCM City; Cai Mep-Thi Vai in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, in addition to Vung Tau container port. The company is aiming for an average cargo capacity of between 50-55 million tonnes at each of its ports by 2010. Vinalines is also looking to turn Van Phong port in the central province of Khanh Hoa into a modern international entrepot. Vinalines expects to complete the first phase of its building plans for logistical and maritime services nationwide by 2010. Vinalines said it is also planning to move into banking and finance, as well as shipbuilding and transport-infrastructure development.

Denmark's Mermaid Maritime (Vietnam) Ltd. has opened its office in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province under a cooperation agreement between Vietnamese and Danish firms in the oil and gas industry. The event took place early this week on the occasion of a Vietnam visit by eight Danish offshore industry companies from October 9-13 to explore business opportunities. Mermaid Maritime (Vietnam) is located in Dong Xuyen Industrial Park. Though it was set up in October 2004, it has already become a market leader in marine and offshore safety equipment in Vietnam. The visit also takes in Hanoi and HCMC. The delegation is scheduled to join seminars aimed at looking into the prospects-for cooperation in the oil and gas industry. The seminars are arranged by the Danish embassy in cooperation with PetroVietnam.
