NSR Traffic May Increase 8-Fold by 2020

The Deputy Head of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, Viktor Olersky, accompanied by the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, Koji Sekimizu, on an inspection visit at the eastern sector of the Northern Sea Route, told RiaNovosti that traffic on the Northern Sea Route may increase more than 8 times by 2020, reaching 30 million tonnes a year. Citing Olersky, Ria Novosti report that today there is active development of the shelves of the Barents and Kara Seas with dozens of oil platforms each supplied by two or three vessels. The port of Sabetta under construction, according to preliminary estimates of the deputy head of the ministry, will take 220 ship calls each year.

Moscow to Rule Northern Sea Route

Deputy Minister of Transport Victor Olerskyz informed that the Northern Sea Route will be administrated from Moscow. The new headquarters for the Northern Sea Route (NSR) will open in Moscow on January 28 2013. A representative office may be opened in Arkhangelsk later, according to the 'Barents Observer'. The Northern Sea Route is becoming a more and more important route for transportation of cargo between Europe and Asia. 2012 was a record season both in relation to the amount of cargo and the number of vessels. 46 vessels sailed the route in 2012, compared to 34 in 2011 and only four in 2010. The total cargo transported on the NSR last year was 1 261 545 tons – a 53 percent increase from 2011, when 820 789 tons was shipped on the route.

Russian GLONASS GPS Designer Fired

The chief designer or Russia’s Glonass satellite navigation system, Yury Urlichich, has been dismissed. The Glonass program has been in the works since the 1970s, but underwent a radical revamp in 2001. The 24 satellites comprising the system were put into orbit by 2010, The program cost 140 billion rubles (US$4.4 billion) to implement, and its budget for 2012-2020 stands at a further 326 billion rubles (US$10 billion). According to RiaNovosti the decision was made by the government’s military-industrial commission, which is headed by Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin. Russia’s rival to GPS was rocked by fraud allegations earlier this month, with the Interior Ministry accusing unnamed Glonass officers of embezzling 6.5 billion rubles (US$200-million) of program’s funds.

Russia Plans to Raise Sunken Nuclear Submarines

The two submarines need to be raised & scrapped so as to avoid radiation pollution & are located in the northern Barents and Kara Seas. Russia to Deliver Indian Aircraft Carrier in Fall 2013

The 'Vikramaditya', formerly the Russian Navy's Admiral Gorshkov, already years past its set delivery had been due for delivery in December 2012. Pre-handover sea trials in September revealed the ship's boilers were not fully functional, but these defects are expected to be remedied at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk by summer 2013, reports RiaNovosti. Indian media have speculated New Delhi may seek more than $100 million in penalty payments from Russia for the latest delays in handing over the refitted aircraft carrier.

Iran Puts Russian-built Sub in Service

Iran overhauls Russian-built 'Kilo-class' submarine, brings her back into operation The Iranian Navy has brought back into operation a Russian-built submarine, after major repairs with locally produced components, Rianovosti was informed by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting company, IRIB, recently. Some 18,000 components, including propellers and radars, were replaced on the Tareq (Russian Project 877EKM Paltus), one of Iran’s three Kilo-class submarines, which entered service in 1992. The submarine was relaunched from a dry dock in an Iranian port. The other two Kilo-class subs are the Nooh (1993) and the Yunes (1997).

Israel Gets Nuclear Missile-capable Submarine

An official ceremony to hand over to Israel a Dolphin-class submarine, which can carry nuclear weapons, took place in the German city of Kiel, according to Rianovosti. The German-made submarine, named Tanin ("alligator" in Hebrew), is due to enter service in 2013, when all tests are completed. The Tanin is the fourth submarine of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), and one of the country’s most expensive defense contracts. Its construction costs are estimated at $500 million, with one third being subsidized by the German government. "The Navy and the submarine fleet constitute a deterrent, protective and strategic arm for the IDF and for the State of Israel," Defense Minister Ehud Barak said during the ceremony.

Russian warships will be equipped with NATO navigation and communications systems to improve coordination in anti-piracy missions around the world, Chief of the Russian General Staff Nikolai Makarov, as reported by Rianovosti News Agency. The issue has been discussed during a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council in Brussels. “We decided to install standard NATO navigation and communications systems on our warships,” Makarov said. NATO warships have been patrolling the pirate-infested waters off the Somali coast since 2008, as part of Operation Ocean Shield.

India to Deploy Two Nuclear Submarines

India will operate two nuclear powered submarines soon according to official Russian news agency Rianovosti, as it inducts the Russian Nerpa and launches the indigenous INS Arihant, Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). Chief V K Saraswat said,"INS Arihant is in advanced stages. India is also testing the Sagarika K-15 missile that will be carried by INS Arihant, V K Saraswat said, adding that more than 10 test launches have been carried out in the Bay of Bengal. The Nerpa has been leased from Russia for ten years.
