Tugboat Crew Recognized by USCG for Assisting Disabled Vessel
The captain and crew aboard the tugboat Explorer, which is managed by Crowley Maritime Corp, were recognized by U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral William Baumgartner, who serves as commander of the Seventh Coast Guard District in Miami, for their humanitarian actions, unwavering determination, professionalism and skilled seamanship after they assisted a vessel that ran out of fuel 30 miles west of Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands in December. Record Attendance for SNAME 2009
Challenging economic conditions didn’t stop a record number of industry professionals from attending The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) 2009 Annual Meeting and Expo. The three-day event (October 21-23) drew more than 1,150 to the Providence, Rhode Island Convention Center. "In all aspects, the 2009 SNAME Annual Meeting was a resounding success. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to those who attended the meeting, the many SNAME volunteers who organized the technical programs and social events, the meeting sponsors and those who exhibited at our EXPO. We look to build on this success and promise an exciting and stimulating meeting in Seattle/Bellevue in 2010,” said SNAME President Keith Michel.
Criminal Charges in Staten Island Ferry Crash
The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York issued a release discussing the criminal charges arising out of the October 15, 2003 crash of the Staten Island ferry Andrew J. Barberi into the ferry terminal at St. George, an accident which killed 11 and injured dozens. The ferry pilot pled guilty to manslaughter. The director of ferry operations has been charged with manslaughter, obstruction of justice, and making a false statement. A port captain has been charged with obstruction of justice and making a false statement. The ferry captain and a doctor have been charged with making false statements.
