A Killing at Sea Implicates the Armed Forces in Lawless Venezuela

Around midnight on February 23, Eulalio Bravo, a marine electrician, was dozing in his rack aboard the San Ramon, an oil tanker anchored off the coast of Venezuela.Suddenly, he heard footsteps pounding along the passageway outside. His captain, Jaime Herrera, cried for help."Be still!" an unfamiliar voice ordered.A gun fired.By the time Bravo and eight other shipmates emerged to see what had happened, the captain lay dead, a gunshot in the back of his head. Herrera's stateroom had been pillaged, drawers flung open, his bunk overturned. MOL, Mitsui Join in Modec FPSO Project

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Mitsui & Co have participated in a long-term charter business  operated by MODEC for the purpose of providing a floating production, storage, and offloading system (FPSO) for use in the Area 1 block offshore Mexico and a loan agreement for the Project was entered into on April 12, 2019.Mitsui and MOL invested in Area1 Mexico MV34 B.V. ("MV34"), a Dutch company established by MODEC, which will engage in FPSO leasing, operations and maintenance services.In December 2018, MV34 concluded the charter agreement with Eni Mexico S. de R.L. de C.V. ("Eni Mexico"), the operator of Area 1 block and a subsidiary of Eni S.p.A.

Sempra Energy to Build Liquid Fuel Terminal in Mexico

Sempra Energy announced that its Mexican subsidiary, Infraestructura Energética Nova, S.A.B. de C.V. (IEnova), plans to develop, build and operate a receipt, storage and send-out liquid fuels marine terminal at the La Jovita Energy Hub in Ensenada, Mexico. With an expected investment of approximately USD 130 million, the new Baja Refinados liquid fuels terminal will have an initial storage capacity of 1 million barrels of gasoline and diesel that will increase the fuel supply capacity and reliability in Baja California. The Marine terminal is expected to commence operations in the second half of 2020. IEnova also announced it has signed a long-term contract with Chevron Combustibles de México S. de R.L.

First RAstar 3200 Tugs from Robert Allan Ltd.

In late February, 2009, the RAstar 3200 Class tug Monterrey was delivered to the Owners Servicios Marítimos de Baja California, S. de R.L de C.V. of Mexico by the builders Union Naval Valencia (UNV) of Valencia, Spain. Servicios Marítimos de Baja California, S. de R.L de C.V. is a joint venture between Moran Towing of the USA and Grupo Boluda of Spain. This tug is the first of four expressly designed to work at the Costa Azul LNG terminal on the north-west coast of Mexico, at a terminal exposed to fully developed Pacific swells.

Global Awarded PEMEX Contract

Global Industries, Ltd. said that subsidiary Global Offshore Mexico S. de R.L. de C.V. received a letter of intent from PEMEX Exploration & Production to install three 20-inch diameter pipelines and nine 12-inch diameter pipelines as part of the EPC-77 Project in the Cantarell Field. The field is located in Mexico's Bay of Campeche. The Project is valued at approximately $100 million and scheduled to be completed by the end of the first quarter 2005. William J. Doré, Chairman and CEO, stated, "The project will utilize our vessels Hercules, Shawnee, and Pioneer. This award reflects the significant level of project activity in the Bay of Campeche."

Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co.,Opens Astilleros Bender

Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co., Inc. of Mobile, Ala.has announced the opening of Astilleros Bender S. De R.L. De C.V. in Tampico, Mexico. Astilleros Bender is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bender. The shipyard is located on the south side of the Panuco River 10 km upstream from the Gulf o Mexico and across the city of Tampico. The yard consists of 125 acres of land and 3000 ft. of river frontage accessed by 28 ft. deep maintained channel. Astilleros Bender currently is concentrating on ship repair and has in operation a 3000 ton lift capacity dry dco and some 1,500 feet of river side repair facility open for business.

Passenger Carries Hurt

American Classic Voyages Co. subsidiaries Delta Queen will trim its upcoming cruise schedule by a combined total of 27 cruises. Delta Queen Coastal Voyages will eliminate three cruises in 2001. Also, the 2002 summer and fall schedule of the 174-passenger Delta Queen will be enhanced to meet passenger demand for more variety. Moody's Investors Service confirmed the A2 senior ratings of Carnival Corporation, but changed the rating outlook to negative reflecting the uncertain economic and industry conditions that the company faces in the wake of the attacks on the U.S. Moody's believes the events of September 11 will further stress industry conditions that were already suffering from price weakness.

Horizon Receives Pemex Contract in Mexico

Horizon Offshore’s subsidiaries, HOC Offshore S. de R.L. de C.V. and Horizon Offshore Contractors, Inc. jointly received a letter of award for the KU-MALOOB-ZAAP project from Pemex Exploracion y Produccion. The project calls for installation, tie-in, and associated topside hookup works of four pipelines. Horizon will utilize its lay barge Lone Star Horizon on the project. Construction is scheduled to begin late in the third-quarter of 2005. “Despite having experienced economic difficulties during a period of lower demand for our services, we have maintained good relationships with all of our major customers, including Pemex,” said David Sharp, President and CEO of Horizon Offshore, Inc. successfully complete major construction projects.
