Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) revealed that the total ridership of marine transit modes in Dubai has clocked 7,182,435 riders during the first half of this year. Abras (boat) accounted for the biggest number of commuters ferrying as much as 6,867,348 riders. “Serving 7,182,435 riders in six months by marine transit means is indicative of the public uptake of marine transit modes, which offer users enjoyable and convenient rides,” said Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA’s Public Transport Agency. “Abras, be it traditional, electrical or air-conditioned, have accounted for the biggest share of ridership by ferrying as much as 6,867,348 riders in the first six months of this year.

Engineering, construction, technical, and professional services provider, Parsons, says it has been awarded a contract by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to perform infrastructure design services for the Dubai Water Canal Project. Planned to be a major tourist destination, the Dubai Water Canal will include a new shopping center, hotels, and restaurants, in addition to luxury housing and cycling paths. It is expected to provide new areas for public places and facilities, as well as private marinas for boats and a new trade center at the canal’s entrance. “Parsons has been working with RTA for many years, and we look forward to continuing to be RTA’s partner of choice for this landmark project,” said Hamed Zaghw, President of Parsons International Limited.

The Parsons/Halcrow Joint Venture (JV) informs it has been selected by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for the construction supervision of the Dubai Water Canal Project. Dubai Ferry’s new October 2012 route, connects the cruise terminal at Port Rashid with Al Ghubaiba station in Bur Dubai. The new route is part of the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) efforts to upgrade the marine transport services. According to RTA, the 100-seater ferries, which until now served on two routes — from Al Ghubaiba to Burj Al Arab and back, from Dubai Marina to Atlantis and back — have grown in popularity since their launch in March last year. The sleek looking boats can travel at a maximum speed of 24 knots and have restrooms, kiosks for selling souvenirs and snacks as well as four LCD screens to provide entertainment facilities on board.

Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA), the government authority in charge of regulating and supervising all aspects of the maritime sector in Dubai, has held today (Monday, June 25, 2012) the first-ever maritime industry workshop in Dubai attended by key maritime industry partners in the emirate. The workshop was organized in line with the strategic cooperation and collaboration between DMCA and its industry partners to create an integrated ecosystem that complies with the highest international standards of sustainability and maritime safety.

While the world is in the grip of an economic slowdown, the Arabian Gulf remains a dynamic growth centre for ship building and repair, said a maritime industry observer. “The region is one of the busiest commercial maritime hubs with the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar having major ports and shipyards with more being built,” said Christopher Hayman, Chairman of Seatrade, organisers of the region's premier event focused on workboats to be held in Abu Dhabi later this year. Workboats include tugs, ferries, supply vessels; police, fire, patrol, pilot, rescue and oil spill boats; along with, dredgers, barges and floating cranes, with more than 2,000 such vessels estimated to be docked or repaired in the Middle East.

Regional demand for fast vessels carrying between eight and up to 300 passengers could exceed 400 over the next 10 years, said shipbuilders from countries such as the Netherlands, Turkey, Norway and Australia hoping to win a share of orders. “We are anticipating there is going to be a huge demand for passenger transport of all kinds,” said Martin de Bruijn, Middle East sales director for Damen Shipyards of the Netherlands which recently announced a joint venture with Albwardy Marine Engineering of Dubai.
