Mohawk Changes Command
Coast Guard Cmdr. Craig J. Wieschhorster took command of the medium-endurance Cutter Mohawk during a ceremony Thursday at Coast Guard Sector Key West. Coast Guard Atlantic Area chief of staff, Capt. Doug Fears presided over the change of command ceremony as Wieschhorster relieved Cmdr. Adam B. Morrison of the duties and responsibilities as 14th commanding officer of the Cutter Mohawk. âAlthough I leave the Cutter Mohawk with a heavy heart,â said Morrison, âI have trust in Cmdr. Morrison was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal recognizing his service and performance of duty. During Morrisonâs successful two-year command, Cutter Mohawkâs crew achieved a number of operational successes.
Derecktor Shipyard Named Licensed Damen Builder
Damen licenses another U.S. Robert E. Derecktor Inc. and Damen Shipyard Group have entered into a license agreement authorizing Derecktor to act as an official builder of Damen designs. The agreement will see Derecktor offer its customers pilot boats and wind farm support vessels combining the range and international experience of Damen designs with its own American craftsmanship, which Derecktor says creates an innovative, cost-effective experience for its customers, with proven performance and reliable U.S.-based support and maintenance.
Zero Emission Vessels â The Tide is Turning
Battery based energy storage systems for marine applications are finally moving, cleanly along the global waterfront at full speed. The UN Report on climate change on November 2, 2014, stated that the unregulated use of carbon based fuels must cease by the end of the century. While people can debate the causes of global climate change, this type of strong statement is increasingly familiar. The shipping industry is one of the largest consumers of carbon-based fuel, and as such, has great reason to be concerned.
Marine Noise Emissions: Is it Your Next Regulatory and Environmental Hurdle?
A different kind of emission in the compliance spotlight â above and below decks. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Equipment during its 2012, 56th session submitted a draft revised code on noise levels onboard ships. The code set out mandatory noise level limits for machinery spaces, control rooms, workshops, cargo blocks and accommodation spaces in an effort to address health and safety issues on board ships, ATBâs and/or tugboats.
âGreenâ Hybrid-powered Research Vessel Christened
The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk christened a larger, âgreenerâ new research vessel on Friday, September 26 in preparation for launching a new era in examining, monitoring and teaching about Long Island Sound. The $2.7 million environmentally friendly research vessel, Spirit of the Sound, was christened and officially named during a ceremony at the Aquarium dock. Breaking a bottle on her hull was godmother of the boat, Astrid Heidenreich of Greenwich. The boat will reportedly be the first research vessel in the U.S. running on hybrid-electric propulsion.
Derecktor to Build Catamaran
Robert E. Derecktor, Inc., is pleased to announce its selection to build a new 19.2-meter catamaran research and classroom vessel for The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk (CT). The Maritime Aquarium has been providing student and public research voyages in the protected waters of Long Island Sound since 1988. The new Incat Crowther-designed all-aluminum vessel will carry up to 65 students with a crew of 5. The safety of the students is of paramount importance to the vessel's design and construction. The vessel will be fully ADA compliant and meet all current USCG Subchapter T requirements.
Derecktor Christens New Dry Dock
The Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Joan McDonald shook off her champagne soaked hands and flashed a big smile after she smashed a champagne bottle on her first try to christen the "Robert E. McDonald had the honor of christening the Robert E. Derecktor, the newly recommissioned dry dock at Derecktor Shipyards. The dry dock will allow the Bridgeport boat yard to repair and build larger ships. âThe partnership between Derecktor Shipyards and the state has been a fruitful one and one we hope will continue for years to come,â said Joan McDonald. âDerecktor is a brand known round the world, and weâre proud to support its growth.
Shipyard files Chapter 11, but Derecktor Maintains its Course to Grow
Derecktor Shipyards Conn., LLC last month filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. The company said the filing was the result of a single contract dispute, and that it is still busy and fully staffed, working on several newbuild projects, including a contract to build a massive 85.6-m motor yacht, a 45-m catamaran and a pair of tugboats for Boston Towing and Transport. In addition, the Derecktor yard in Connecticut has a building slot open starting September 2008, as well as a build slot available for delivery at the end of 2011/beginning of 2012. "The company has been engaged in lengthy negotiations to resolve issues relating to one of its contracts," said Paul Derecktor, president.
