Former USCG Commandant Kramek Passes Away

Adm. Robert E. Kramek, former Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, has died October 20, 2016. Kramek served as the Coast Guard's 20th commandant from 1994 through 1998, during which time he significantly expanded the Coast Guard's global reach and influence as commandant, including directing active participation in the combined service/international anti-narcotic smuggling operations Frontier Shield and Gulf Shield, along with other law enforcement operations. I talk a lot. much. But it is an inherent element of my professsion in the timely collection and dissemination of information. More importantly, though, is that I know when to shut up and listen. No matter how many hours I spend on the phone or in myriad meetings during a given year, there is always one conversation that stands out; one conversation that conveys more than the others combined. I had the pleasure of that conversation last month in a conference call with Admiral Robert E. Kramek, (USCG retired), President and COO, ABS Americas, and co-chairman of the conference's technical committee, and Dr. Henry S. Marcus, Professor of Marine Systems in the Ocean Engineering Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"Ink" It In: WMTC a Must for Maritime Professionals

Mirroring the metamorphosis of the globalization of the marine industry and seeking to stake a leadership claim atop the marine technology information heap, the World Maritime Technology Conference & Exposition will bring together the world, both literally and figuratively, in San Francisco in late October. Naval Vessel Rules Agreement Signed Between ABS and NAVSEA

ABS has signed a formal Cooperative Agreement with the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) further strengthening its longstanding relationship with the US Navy. The agreement calls for joint development of ABS Naval Vessel Rules (NVR) to support the design and acquisition of Naval Combatant Ships and Craft. The landmark agreement signed by VADM Phillip M. Balisle, US Navy and ABS Americas President Robert E. Kramek lays the groundwork for ABS participation in Naval Combatant Ship Programs, in a similar fashion to ABS’ traditional role in the construction of Military Sealift Command (MSC) operated ships. Grove Appointed ABS Americas President

ABS has named Todd Grove President of its ABS Americas Division effective May 1, 2004. He will replace Robert E. Kramek who, as previously announced, will assume the role of President and Chief Operating Officer of ABS at that time. Grove currently serves as Vice President Western Region, ABS Europe. In his new role he will be located at the Americas’ Division headquarters in Houston, Texas. He will have operational responsibility for all ABS classification activity in North, Central and South America.

Somerville Takes Over at ABS

Robert D. Somerville, has been elected Chairman of ABS. He replaces Frank J. Iarossi who has stepped down after 14 years at the head of the world’s third largest classification society. The previously announced and carefully planned transition took effect with the approval of Somerville in the post by the ABS Council following the Annual Meeting of the society in New York today. The Council is a 60 person body, representative of the maritime industry, drawn from the more than 800 worldwide members of ABS. The Council also confirmed Somerville’s re-election as Chief Executive Officer of the classification society. Somerville, a 34 year veteran of ABS had served as President of the society since 1993.

Alaska Tanker Company Awarded SQE Certification

Alaska Tanker Company, LLC (ATC) based in Beaverton (Portland), Oregon has achieved "Safety, Quality and Environmental (SQE) Certification" including Accredited International Standards Organization (ISO) 14001 Certification to the Environmental Management System Standard on November 21st, 2001. This accomplishment makes ATC the first U.S. flag seagoing Shipping Company to attain SQE and ISO 14001 Certification from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). This feat was achieved within 2 ½ years of ATC's inception. The attainment of Certification to the International Safety Management (ISM) Code as well as ISO 9001 (Quality Management System Standard) and ISO 14001 demonstrates the Company's commitment to be a World-Class tanker operator.

Diamond Offshore Meets Requirements

ABS recently awarded Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc. an International Safety Management (ISM) Document of Compliance certificate. The ISM certification is a requirement of the United Nations-led International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulation, which became mandatory for all self-propelled offshore drilling vessels operating under member-state flags on July 1, 2002. prevention and the safe management of ship operations. management system designed to protect not only the vessel, but also the offshore personnel and marine environment where the vessel operates. Mexico; and the Ocean Alliance, Ocean Clipper and Ocean Yatzy, each currently operating off the coast of Brazil.

Kramek Joins Rowan Board

Rowan Companies, Inc. announced the appointment of Robert E. Kramek to its Board of Directors. The Board intends to seek stockholder approval of Mr. Kramek's election at its May 2007 stockholder meeting. Mr. Kramek recently retired from the American Bureau of Shipping where he has served since 1998, most recently as President and Chief Operating Officer. Prior to joining ABS, Mr. Kramek was Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, from which he retired as a Four Star Admiral. Mr. Kramek is a naval architect and marine engineer and has received numerous honors and military awards during his distinguished career. Daniel F. Admiral Kramek Named President-Elect of SNAME

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) named Robert E. Kramek president elect of the organization at its recent Annual Maritime Technology Conference & Expo in Houston, Texas. Kramek, President and Chief Operating Officer of ABS will commence his term January 1, 2007, succeeding current SNAME President Dr. Roger H. Compton. Admiral Kramek is a former Commandant of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) from which he retired as a Four Star Admiral. Admiral Robert E. Kramek graduated with honors from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Academy with a B.S. in engineering in 1961 and attended postgraduate schools at the University of Michigan, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Alaska.

ABS Issues Guide For Ship Security

ABS will issue a new, comprehensive "Guide For Ship Security" in early January to assist shipowners in meeting the new IMO security standards. These standards are incorporated in the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code), adopted by the Contracting Governments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) 1974 at the just completed IMO Diplomatic Conference. Somerville Elected CEO of ABS

Robert D. Somerville, currently President and Chief Operating Officer of ABS has been elected to the position of Chief Executive Officer by the ABS Board of Directors. These duties will be in addition to Mr. Somerville’s current responsibilities. The transfer of CEO responsibilities from ABS Chairman Frank J. Iarossi marks the first phase in a carefully planned leadership transition strategy. Mr Iarossi will continue as Chairman of the classification society until 1 May 2004 and remains Chairman and CEO of the ABS Group of Companies, an affiliate of ABS. The Board of Directors has also elected Robert E. Kramek, currently Senior Vice President and President, ABS Americas division to the position of Executive Vice President.
