Commissioning, Amphibious Transport Dock Ship
The Navy will commissioned the newest San Antonio class amphibious transport dock ship Green Bay during a 10 a.m. PST ceremony Jan. 24 in Long Beach, Calif. The ship is named Green Bay to honor the nation's Midwest "city by the bay." The city of about 100,000 residents was founded in 1634 by French explorer Jean Nicolet, and is the oldest community in Wisconsin. Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England delivered the ceremony's principal address. Rose Magnus, wife of the former Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Robert Magnus (ret.), served as the ship's sponsor.
Navy Accepts Delivery of Green Bay (LPD 20)
The Navy accepted delivery of (LPD 20) from Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding (NGSB) in , Aug. 29. This is the fourth ship of the class of amphibious transport dock ships that NGSB has delivered. Accepting for the Navy during a simple onboard ceremony was Capt. Beth Dexter, Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair, and ’s Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Joe Olson. Following the delivery ceremony, the crew of boarded their ship. The ship’s sponsor, Mrs. Rose Magnus, and her husband, retired Marine Corps Gen. Robert Magnus, joined the crew for their first onboard meal in the “Lambeau Lounge.” With the move aboard the ship, the crew started their regular duties of standing watches, preparing meals, training and conducting post delivery testing.
Fourth LPD 17 Class Amphibious Transport Dock Launched
The future USS Green Bay LPD 20 was launched this week from the building ways at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems Avondale Operations. The fourth amphibious transport dock of the San Antonio class entered the Mississippi River on August 11. Green Bay’s launching represents important progress since Hurricane Katrina devastated the New Orleans area less than a year ago. With many of the shipyard’s workers still living in trailers or Camp Katrina," temporary living quarters” the ship was launched with 208 units welded and 166 tanks completed. Work will now continue in more than 900 compartments while progressing toward Electronic System Light Off this fall.
Green Bay (LPD 20) Christening Slated for July 15
On Saturday July 15, Gen. Robert Magnus, assistant commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, will give the principal address at the christening of Green Bay (LPD 20), an amphibious transport dock ship being built by Northrop Grumman Corporation. The ceremony will be held at the company's New Orleans Operations beginning at 10 a.m. The name Green Bay honors the city of Green Bay, Wis. One of the oldest settlements in the country, Green Bay has been a home to the record-making football team, the Green Bay Packers, since 1919. Green Bay (LPD 20) is the fourth ship in the San Antonio (LPD 17)-class of amphibious transport dock ships being built for the U.S. Navy/U.S. Marine Corps by Northrop Grumman.
