Nautical Institute Elects new President

The newly elected President of The Nautical Institute, Captain David (Duke) Snider FNI, has pledged to ensure the mariner’s voice is heard loud and clear within the maritime industry. Speaking at the Institute’s annual general meeting in Aberdeen, Scotland, on 9 June, Captain Snider said that one of his first roles as President will be to champion the new five-year Strategic Plan, which was launched in March. The plan, informed by responses from more than 1,400 members surveyed in a questionnaire, will see a renewed focus on human element projects aimed at building competencies for modern integrated ships. Command, manning and fatigue, mentorship and continuing professional development (CPD) were other themes identified for further development.

Inaugural Meet of Nautical Institute (Singapore)

The Nautical Institute (Singapore) has been established as a branch of The Nautical Institute, the international professional organisation for maritime professionals. It will hold its inaugural meeting in the Republic during Maritime Week. The new branch has recently been registered with the Singapore Registry of Societies. It aims to attract maritime professionals from every corner of the industry from Singapore’s widely based maritime sector. A preliminary meeting was held in February this year at which 44 members of The Nautical Institute met to review the Constitution, as approved by the Registry of Societies, Singapore. The members also elected the office bearers and committee members.

Sustainable Future for Maritime Professionals

Sustainability features strongly in The Nautical Institute’s latest Strategic Plan, which has just been published and will run to 2020. It incorporates the views of 1,400 members who responded to a call to help guide the Institute’s work. “Sustainability can also apply to professions,” pointed out Captain McCabe. “A cornerstone of sustainability is knowledge, and knowledge in a rapidly changing environment can only be gained by sharing. * Offshore-focused operations. “Sustainability also means reaching out to the younger generations who join our profession and helping them to develop themselves,” said Captain McCabe. The Institute is committed to raising competency levels, particularly by encouraging mentoring. “We must promulgate best practice.

Human Performance and Limitation for Mariners

The Nautical Institute’s latest book, Human Performance and Limitation for Mariners, builds on a concept first introduced in the aviation industry that was responsible for a massive reduction in accidents. This concept will enable seafarers to make the best use of their physical and mental abilities in the challenging shipboard environment. “In aviation the concept of human performance and limitation (HPL) has been credited with great advances in safety,” he explained. “Pilots came to understand the realities of human limitations and their implication for delivering consistent overall performance. “ This publication will help seafarers to benefit from those advances.
