2011 Admiral of the Ocean Sea (AOTOS) Awards

James Henry, General Duncan McNabb and Robert Somerville Receive 2011 Admiral of the Ocean Sea (AOTOS) Awards. United Seamen's Service 42nd award dinner held in N.Y. on October 28, 2011. The United Seamen's Service (USS) 2011 Admiral of the Ocean Sea Awards (AOTOS) were presented to James L. Henry, Chairman and President of the Transportation Institute; General Duncan J. McNabb, USAF, former Commander, U.S. Transportation Command; and Robert D. Somerville, Chairman of ABS (formerly the American Bureau of Shipping). The maritime industry's most prestigious awards since 1969 were presented at a gala industry dinner and dance for more than 700 people at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers, New York City.

The United Seamen's Service (USS) 2011 Admiral of the Ocean Sea Awards (AOTOS) will be presented to James L. Henry, Chairman and President of the Transportation Institute; General Duncan J. McNabb, Commander, U.S. Transportation Command; and Robert D. Somerville, Chairman of ABS (formerly the American Bureau of Shipping). The maritime industry's most prestigious awards will be presented at a gala industry dinner and dance to be held at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers, New York City, on October 28, 2011. A special AOTOS recognition plaque will be presented to Captain George Quick, former President of the Association of Maryland Pilots. "We are so proud to be able to honor labor, military and service providers who represent strong leadership in the maritime industry.

ABS President Comments on Bulk Carrier Safety

At the Seatrade International Maritime Convention in London, ABS President and CEO, Robert Somerville commented on Bulk Carrier Safety.It was in the tumultuous period when the tanker industry was still trying to adjust to OPA90, to the mandate for double hulls, to the uncertainties of COFRs and all the rest of the restrictions that were being placed on their operations.It was also a time when there had been a casualty, with a small amount of pollution, involving a bulk carrier.Of course the incident was portrayed the media as another “tanker” casualty.That owner was very, very frustrated.His basic argument was that his dry bulk brethren just “didn’t get it.”That it was not just tanker operators who had been thrust into an entirely different ballgame.

Image ... Integrity ... impossible? In case you haven’t noticed, the marine industry has been engaged in a systematic metamorphosis of sorts, with a good deal of energy and resources dedicated lately towards the dubious achievement of crafting a “good public image.” From inland operators concerned with local communities to oceangoing ships adhering to international statutes, the forum and the jury range widely in size and makeup, but the judge — “public” opinion — is always the same, and the verdict of “good image” or “bad image” can go a long way in ultimately determining a company’s long-term success. Industry leaders traveling the well-worn conference circuit have increasingly addressed the need for the marine business to essentially clean-up its collective act.

Napa, ABS Team on Safehull Express

The ongoing collaboration between Napa Ltd and ABS has culminated in the recent release of a new version of SafeHull, called SafeHull Express. SafeHull Express is used for the design and assessment of ship structures in accordance with the ABS rules. The new and upcoming versions of ABS SafeHull Express are based on NAPA technology and functions, developed through cooperation between Napa Ltd and ABS Americas. The joining of forces has resulted in the integration of a complete initial strength assessment system into the shipyard production process. This is the first time such integration has been achieved. The fundamental benefit of integration is that a single 3D ship model can be used consistently in various system environments, which makes the design-to-production process one continuum.

Evergreen Achieves Fleet Compliance To ISPS Code

Evergreen Marine Corporation, one of the world’s largest containership operators, has achieved certification to the new International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code for its entire 75-vessel fleet. Auditors from the ABS Pacific Division have played a key role in helping the Taiwan-based container shipping company meet this landmark well in advance of the July 2004 implementation date. The Panamanian-flagged 4,211 teu Ever Develop was the last vessel in the fleet to be certified, completing all requirements by late March. “With other companies struggling to meet the fast approaching deadline, this early compliance to the ISPS code for such a large global fleet speaks to the deep commitment of Evergreen for systems certification in support of safety…
