Those shipowners looking to install marine exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) as way of meeting global sulfur cap requirements are advised to ensure that manufacturers, shipyards and installers are using quality, high-end materials.Based on the collective experience gained from more than 1500 EGCS installations, Clean Shipping Alliance (CSA) 2020 members found the quality of materials and coatings used is the most important factor in optimizing EGCS safety and averting any corrosion problems during operation.“There are always some challenges involved when specifying ships’ machinery systems and scrubbers are no different,” said Arne Hubregtse, Executive Board Member, Spliethoff.

The Norwegian/Swedish shipping company, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics is the latest shipowner to join the Clean Shipping Alliance 2020 (CSA 2020), increasing the organisation’s membership to 35 shipowners operating a combined fleet of almost 2500 vessels.Roger Strevens, Vice President, Global Sustainability, Wallenius Wilhelmsen, pictured, said: “The implementation of the IMO 2020 0.5% global sulphur cap is supported by the company, but it does represent a significant challenge for the shipping industry, not least from an anticipated hike in fuel costs and potential availability and quality problems.“To mitigate the risk and costs associated with these challenges, Wallenius Wilhelmsen will use low sulphur fuels on the majority of its fleet and scrubbers on the rest of its vessels.

Crowley Maritime Corp. announced its membership in the Trident Alliance, a coalition of shipping owners and operators that share a common interest in robust enforcement of existing maritime sulphur regulations. In joining, Crowley said it has signed a statement of commitment, certifying that the company agrees to comply with sulfur regulations and support the robust and transparent enforcement of these regulations. Trident Alliance has invited representatives from national and European authorities and NGO’s to discuss how effective enforcement of sulphur regulations can be achieved on the high seas. The event will take place on March 3 during the European Shipping Week in Brussels. The ECA zones 0.1 % Sulphur limit came into force as of January 1, 2015. Trident Alliance said robust enforcement is necessary to achieve the intended benefits to health and the environment, and is also critical to ensuring fair competition. Compliance comes at unprecedented expense, Trident Alliance noted. Notwithstanding recent drops in oil prices, the price differential between HFO and MGO has changed little. Switching to lower sulphur MGO almost doubles fuel costs.

The Trident Alliance, a shipping industry initiative for enforcement of maritime sulphur regulations, has today been formally launched. The Trident Alliance is a coalition of shipowners and operators who share a common interest in robust enforcement of maritime sulphur regulation and are willing to collaborate to help bring it about. The Alliance will partner with other groups who share its interest in robust enforcement, to support this objective. The Trident Alliance welcomes all shipping companies that subscribe to the above. The current membership list includes: American Roll-on Roll-off Carrier (ARC), EUKOR Car Carriers Inc., Höegh Autoliners, J. Lauritzen, Maersk, Rickmers-Linie, Stena, Torvald Klaveness, UECC, Unifeeder and Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics.

At a full-day meeting on May 28, hosted by Maersk Maritime Technology and Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) in Copenhagen, representatives from a dozen shipping companies, including some of the world’s largest, negotiated the basis for the new Trident Alliance. At the meeting, the companies agreed that the Trident Alliance will be a coalition of shipping owners and operators who share a common interest in robust enforcement of maritime sulphur regulation and are willing to collaborate to help bring it about.

Trident Alliance, the shipping industry initiative for robust enforcement of maritime sulphur regulations, will hold an exploratory meeting in Copenhagen on May 28. Initially introduced at the Economist’s World Ocean Summit earlier this year, the Trident Alliance initiative has garnered significant interest from ship owners and operators around the world, as well as from other members of the ocean community. Interested parties are now invited to take part in an exploratory meeting with a view to formally establishing the Trident Alliance. The meeting will include setting out the terms of reference and formally defining the objectives for the alliance. Over the past years, significant steps have been taken to implement regulations to limit sulphur emissions from shipping.
