HHI Delivers Philippine Navy Frigate

eMARINE Global Wins ROK Navy Gig

The provider of information and communications technology (ICT) for the maritime industry eMARINE Global  signed a contract with the Republic of Korea Navy for the maintenance of its Anti-Submarine Warfare Team Trainer (ASWTT) at the Jin-Hae Naval Base.The contract is valued at an estimated 920 million won (US$0.76 million), said the Maritime ICT Provider based in South Korea which also have operations in the US.eMARINE has maintained the ASWTT virtual reality simulator, used to simulate battles between warships and submarines, since 2017. The simulator technology was developed by Sindel, an Italian technology company.“eMARINE in an advantageous position to secure work on the second ASWTT installation planned for the Dong-Hae Naval Base,” stated Ung Gyu Kim, Chairman and CEO.

China Leads Global Shipbuilding Industry: Cansi

Chinese Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (Cansi) said that China maintained its top position in the global shipbuilding industry in 2018.Chinese companies built 43.2 percent of the new ships in the world last year, up from 41.9 percent a year ago, cementing the country's leading role in the sector, Xinhua reported quoting Cansi.It said that China received 43.9 percent of global new orders last year and held 42.8 percent of the current orders.From the 1950s to the beginning of the 21st century, the three indices were topped by Japan or the Republic of Korea (ROK), while In 2010, China exceeded the ROK and ranked the first in the world.Given a lackluster global economy…

eMARINE Global Wins Warship ECDIS Contract with Hanjin Heavy

The provider of information and communications technology for the maritime industry eMARINE Global announced its second contract with Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction (HHIC) to deliver its Warship Electronic Chart Display & Information System (WECDIS) for four new Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy patrol ships.The maritime ICT provider in South Korea said in a press release that in 2018, it  successfully delivered on the first phase of this project, installing its innovative WECDIS technology on the first four patrol ships. Indian Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari to Visit South Korea

Nitin Gadkari, India's Union Minister of Shipping will be on an official visit to the Republic of Korea (South Korea) from today (9 April 2018). During the 4 day visit, Shri Gadkari will focus on taking forward the bilateral cooperation between India andKorea in shipping, ports, inland waterways, highways, river interlinking and infrastructure sectors. An Undertaking on Mutual Recognition of Certificate of Competency of sea-farers will be signed during the visit. Known for maritime technology prowess, Republic of Korea (RoK) had partnered with the Ministry of Shipping in the Maritime India Summit held in Mumbai during April 2016. Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group Visits South Korea

Task Force 70 Public Affairs (NNS) - The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group arrived in Busan for a port visit, Oct. 21. The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) with embarked staff of Commander, Task Force (CTF) 70, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15 staff and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, and the guided-missile destroyers USS Stethem (DDG 63) and USS Chafee (DDG 90) pulled into Busan after participating in Maritime Counter Special Operations Force Exercise (MCSOFEX) 2017. The focus of the bilateral training exercise was to increase the readiness of U.S. and Republic of Korea (ROK) forces and maintain stability on the Korean Peninsula. Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group Returns from WESTPAC

The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), Ticonderoga class guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain (CG 57), Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108), along with embarked Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 1, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 1 arrived in San Diego June 23, following a five-and-a-half-month deployment to the Western Pacific. Carl Vinson, Lake Champlain, Wayne E. Meyer and embarked air wing and staffs departed San Diego for a regularly-scheduled deployment with the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group as part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet-led initiative to extend the command and control functions of U.S. 3rd Fleet into the Indo-Asia-Pacific region, Jan.

Rolls-Royce to Power Korean Naval Frigates

Rolls-Royce said it has won a contract to supply MT30 marine gas turbines to power the next three ships in the Republic of Korea Navy’s Daegu-class frigate program. The frigates are intended for a variety of missions including anti-submarine warfare, anti-air warfare, patrol, surveillance, search and rescue, protection of EEZ and transport. In all Eight Daegu-class frigates (also known as FFX Batch 2) are scheduled to be built, the first of which is being built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) and was launched at DSME's Okpo shipyard in June 2016.

Carl Vinson Strike Group Arrives in the Republic of Korea

Aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2 and Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) arrived in Busan, Republic of Korea (ROK) for a scheduled port visit, March 15. The Carl Vinson Strike Group completed two weeks of routine operations in the South China Sea and will continue on their regularly scheduled Western Pacific deployment after departing Busan. Assets from the USS Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group and other United States forces will conduct bi-lateral exercises with forces from the ROK Navy in the waters around the Korean peninsula during the annual Foal Eagle exercise.

Industry Collaborates for LNG Bunkering Study

Lloyd’s Register (LR), Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) have signed a joint development project (JDP) to produce a ship-to-ship LNG bunkering compatibility study. This will comprehensively review the design requirements between 6.6K LNG bunkering ships and 14K TEU LNG-fuelled container ships with the goal of verifying safe ship-to-ship LNG bunkering. The study aims to help all stakeholders with interest in LNG as fuel to envisage a clear picture of possible options for LNG supply infrastructure.

Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson met with his South Korean (ROK) counterpart, Adm. Jung Ho-sub at the Pentagon August 4 for a discussion focused on the strengthening partnerships and ways to work together to increase maritime security throughout the Indo-Asia Pacific. “It's extremely important as we work together – as our two navies work together – that you and I have a personal relationship, that we can call one another up as brothers to work for better ways to collaborate,” said Richardson.

Hyundai Bags NZ Defence Order

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the world’s largest shipbuilder, has won an order to build a 23,000 ton class logistics support vessel for New Zealand Defence Force’s Maritime Sustainment Capability (MSC) project. HHI was selected as a preferred bidder in December 2015. HHI will deliver the logistics support vessel to New Zealand by the end of 2019. Under the MSC project, the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) plans to replace its replenishment tanker HMNZS Endeavour to maintain replenishment capability for the New Zealand Defence Force. HMNZS Endeavor, which has served RNZN for the past 30 years and is still in good condition, was also delivered by HHI in 1987.

North Korea Fires Missiles in Show of Force

Missiles flew far enough to reach any part of S.Korea. North Korea fired three ballistic missiles on Tuesday which flew between 500 and 600 km (300-360 miles) into the sea off its east coast, South Korea's military said, the latest in a series of provocative moves by the isolated country. The U.S. military said it detected launches of what it believed were two Scud missiles and one Rodong, a home-grown missile based on Soviet-era Scud technology. North Korea has fired both types numerous times in recent years, an indication that unlike recent launches that were seen as efforts by the North to improve its missile capability, Tuesday's were meant as a show of force.

US Hospital Ship Aids South Korean Sailor

A U.S. hospital ship conducted a medical evacuation, or “medevac”, May 27 to assist an ailing Republic of Korea sailor aboard a Republic of Korea Navy (ROK-N) submarine. At approximately 10:30 a.m. May 26, the Military Sealift Command operated USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) received orders from Commander Task Force (CTF) 73 to render medical assistance to ROK-N submarine SSK Lee Eok Gi (SS 071) in the mid-Pacific. Mercy, which was approximately 18 hours away, altered its track to meet the submarine.

China, South Korea to Hold Maritime Talks

China and South Korea held talks on delimiting their overlapping exclusive economic zones (EEZs) in the Yellow Sea – the first such discussions in seven years. Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin talked to his South Korean counterpart, Cho Tae-yul on maritime demarcation. Chinese foreign ministry says a reasonable and fair solution between the two countries is significant to the regional peace and stability. President Xi Jinping and his ROK counterpart Park Geun-hye agreed to start the talks in July 2014 during Xi's visit to the ROK. Beijing believes that the ownership of Suyan Rock, a submerged feature in the East China Sea in the exclusive economic zones claimed by both China and the ROK, should be determined through negotiation.

ROK Navy’s Seventh Class 214 Submarine Launched

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has launched South Korea’s seventh KSS-II 1,800-ton submarine, Hong Beom-do, at its Special & Naval Shipbuilding Division in Ulsan, South Korea. The launching ceremony of the Class 214 diesel-electric air independent propulsion (AIP) submarine was attended by Admiral Jung Ho-sub, chief of naval operations of the ROK Navy; Kwon Oh-gap, president and CEO of HHI; and other guests. The Class 214 AIP submarine, measuring 65 meters in length and 7 meters in width, can sail at a maximum speed of 20 knots with a crew of 40. With a 1,800-ton displacement capacity, South Korea’s largest submarine made of high yield steel can dive up to 400 meters deep and last for two weeks under water with fuel cells.

Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea (CNFK) conducted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Feb. 19, officially opening its headquarters in Busan and ushering in a new era of U.S. and Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) alliance. The ceremony, attended by dignitaries and senior U.S. and ROK military leaders, marked the completion of CNFK's relocation to Busan making it the only U.S. military headquarters in Korea located on a ROK base. "Five years in the planning, but 59 years in the making, Commander Naval Forces Korea is home in Busan," Rear Adm. Bill Byrne, commander of CNFK, said. The relocation from Seoul to Busan enhances the alliance between the ROK and U.S. navies by enabling closer collaboration and communication and reinforces the strong relationship between the partner navies.

The U.S. Navy Chief of Naval Operations Adm. The document presents Richardson’s priorities with four “lines of effort” to strengthen naval power at and from the sea; achieve high velocity learning at every level; strengthen our Navy team for the future’ and expand and strengthen our network of partners. It isn’t an earth-shattering document, and perhaps is most telling for what it doesn’t say, as opposed to what is says. The document makes a strong case for forward presence, which has been the raison d’etre for the U.S. Navy for decades.

SOLAS, the international Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, has been in force for more than 30 years and has played a large part reducing the incidence of marine casualty. U.S., Korea Conclude Exercise Clear Horizon
