New Routines on the Bridge in the Digital World

Like every sector of cargo and passenger shipping, “digitalization”—where computerized processes are replacing onboard routines previously handled manually— is an ongoing trend coastwise, on the waterways and harbors. Regulatory compliance, especially with Subchapter M for towing vessels, has also driven choices of onboard equipment with digital interfaces to software and online platforms for record-keeping and for generating inputs for forms and documents.Improved performance has also shaped the capabilities of equipment in the wheelhouse and the view from the bridge.

Electronic Navigational Charts: An Update and Some Issues

In November 2019, the Office of Coast Survey (OCS), part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), announced the start of a five-year program to “sunset” all raster and paper nautical charts.NOAA has produced electronic navigational charts (ENCs) since 1993. In the 2019 notice, NOAA writes that “ENC sales increased 425% since 2008, while sales of paper charts are now half of 2008 levels.”For NOAA and mariners, a focus on electronic charts and publications promises many advantages. With a singular focus, NOAA can use its resources more efficiently.

Rose Point ECS 4 brings to the commercial customer new Voyage Planning tools to streamline Subchapter M Navigation Assessment workflow, automatically creating river routes showing locks and bridges, as well as updating AIS voyage information including encoded destinations and tow size.Rose Point ECS 4 with Services helps administrators and captains meet the requirement for paperless navigation outlined in the Coast Guard NVIC 01-16 for most inland vessels.

New Nav Add-On from Rose Point

Rose Point Releases Pilot Add-On Rose Point Navigation Systems, supplier of navigation software for pilots and operators of light commercial vessels, announced the release of a new Pilot Display Add-on for Rose Point ECS. Many commercial pilots carry aboard a Laptop and use it as a Portable Pilot Unit.
