New Ferry for Red Funnel Floated Out

Cammell Laird recently floated out a new $13 million ferry built for Isle of Wight ferry operator Red Funnel.Dubbed Red Kestrel, the freight-only RoRo is slated to operate between Southampton and Isle of Wight, scheduled to join the fleet in May 2019 after finish and sea trials. Red Kestrel is Red Funnel’s first ship to be designed for freight traffic. As a freight vessel it is limited to 12 passengers and builtspecifically to provide additional year-round freight capacity for Red Funnel’s Southampton-East Cowes route, which currently handles 53% of all freight movements across the Solent.

Rolls-Royce Receives AIP For Hybrid Tug Propulsion System

Rolls-Royce received Approval in Principle (AIP) from classification organization ABS for its novel hybrid propulsion system for tractor tugs.The AIP was granted following an evaluation of the world’s first hybrid tug, a unique vessel designed by Jensen Maritime and which Nichols Brothers Boat Builders will deliver to Baydelta Maritime LLC in February 2019. Rolls-Royce Delivers 1000th Azimuth Thruster for Damen

Rolls-Royce has delivered its 1,000th azimuth thruster to Damen in what marks a milestone achievement in a relationship that spans more than 30 years. The 1,000th and 1,001st Rolls-Royce US 255 FP azimuth thrusters, each with a power of 2,525 kW, will be installed to a new Damen ASD2913 tug. Svitzer Amstel is Named in the Netherlands

A naming ceremony was held on August 30, 2016 for Svitzer Amstel, a new Sanmar ASD 60-metric-ton bollard pull tug operating in the Port of Amsterdam. The naming ceremony of Svitzer Amstel built by Sanmar Shipyards, was hosted by Port Towage Amsterdam. On behalf of Sanmar, Projects Director Ali Gürün and Marketing Director Pınar Gürün Korkmaz have attended the event. In witness of the invited guests and with the Svitzer Amstel alongside on the quay, Dertje Meijer, former CEO of the Port of Amsterdam, named the tug.

New Innovative CNG-Electric Hybrid Ferry Texelstroom

The M/S Texelstroom is more energy efficient, cleaner and more sustainable than her predecessors. CNG-electric hybrid ferry Texelstroom features some of the latest technological developments and innovation, such as a T-shaped beam which ensures a 14 percent car capacity improvement and a CNG/Diesel Hybrid propulsion which make the ship more cost-efficient and thus more environmentally friendly, says C-Job Naval Architects, who is responsible for the vessel’s complete initial, concept and basic design. Other innovations include solar panels, peak shaving batteries and heat recovery. At 135 meters long and 28 meters wide, the new ship is 5 meters taller and wider than her predecessors, C-Job said, though the new Texelstroom is still able to dock in the same port as the Dokter Wagenmaker.

Rolls-Royce Azimuth Thrusters Ordered for New Tug

Rolls-Royce has won an order for US255 FP z-drives from San Francisco’s Vessel Chartering LLC, a wholly owned division of Baydelta Navigation. The thrusters will provide the propulsion for a new high performance tractor tug designed by Jensen Maritime, Crowley Maritime Corp.’s Seattle-based naval architecture and engineering firm. The multipurpose tractor tug, which is being built by JT Marine of Vancouver, Wash., was jointly developed by Vessel Chartering LLC and Jensen. The 110-foot long vessel will feature the ship assist and escort capabilities of smaller harbor tugs, while delivering the improved towing performance and increased range of larger ocean-going tugs.

Multraship Orders Damen Tugs at Europort

Towage and salvage specialist Multraship, through its 100-percent-owned subsidiary Novatug BV, has commissioned the construction of two Carrousel Rave Tugs (CRTs) as well as a new ASD 3212 tug from Damen Shipyards Group. Officially ordered today at a signing ceremony at Damen’s stand at the Europoort exhibition in Rotterdam, the new vessels aim to provide operators with more power, more freedom and more durability, as well as eliminating the risk of capsizing under a tow load.

Cammell Laird Environmental Package Targets Ferry Market

Birkenhead shipyard and engineering services company Cammell Laird said it has developed an advanced shipyard environmental package for ferries, following its strongest year of trading in the sector. Cammell Laird said it has docked 24 ferries between 2013 and the beginning of 2014 and, in addition, has carried out a further 24 afloat repairs for ferry operators. During 2013 Cammell Laird repaired, built and converted almost 250,000 gross tons of ferry and Ro-Ro ships for a wide range of owners. Already in 2014 it has docked and repaired ferries of 150,000 gross tons.

Wilson, Sons Delivers Damen-designed PSV's

Four more vessels under construction. Damen Shipyards is further strengthening its involvement in the Brazilian offshore market with six Platform Supply Vessels, type PSV 4500, built under license by Wilson, Sons (Santos, Brazil) for Wilson Sons Ultratug Offshore (WSUT). Two vessels have been recently delivered; the other four will be delivered throughout 2013. Damen and Wilson have enjoyed a business relationship for 20 years and the new vessels will be supplied to WSUT, a joint venture between Brazilian operator Wilson, Sons and the Chilean Ultratug group for long term charter to Petrobras.

The vessel is being built at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, South Korea for Swiss ship owner and operator Allseas Group. The contract is worth around £18 million and is the largest ever Rolls-Royce thruster order for a single vessel. The thrusters rotate 360 degrees and propel and position the ship, which measures 382 metres in length and 117 metres in width. Named Pieter Schelte, the ship is due to enter into service in 2014 and will carry out installation and decommissioning of oil and gas platforms and pipeline installation projects worldwide. Korean Coast Guard Selects Rolls-Royce Thrusters

Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company,has been selected by the South Korean Coast Guard to supply Azimuth thrusters for a new fleet of 15 tugs. The contract, worth around £12 million, will involve the supply of Rolls-Royce Azimuth thrusters (two per vessel) as the prime propulsion and steering system on these powerful vessels, which will be fully equipped to perform oil-skimming and environmental protection duties. John Yi, Rolls-Royce, Vice President Asia - Naval, said: “We are proud to be a partner of the Korean Coast Guardas they embark on a significant expansion of their fleet by investing in these powerful, highly manoeuvrable vessels. The new class of vessels will replace the Korean Coast Guard’s existing tug fleet, which is also equipped with Rolls-Royce thrusters.

Rolls-Royce Wins Deal to Power 18 Tugs

Rolls-Royce won orders worth around £18 million for the supply of Azimuth thrusters to power 18 new tugs being built in China. Qingdao and Yingkou Ports will take delivery of 12 new tugs, four of which will be the most powerful operating in China. Tangshan and Tangshan Cao Feidian Ports, located in the He Bei province of Northern China, have also placed orders for a total of six tugs. The 18 vessels will all be equipped with two Rolls-Royce Azimuth thrusters. The thrusters comprise an electric motor and a propeller which, as a combined unit can be rotated horizontally in any direction to manoeuvre the vessel without the need for a rudder.

Rolls-Royce Supplies Republic of Korea Navy

Rolls-Royce announced that it has won an order to supply propulsion equipment for four new tugboats for the Republic of Korea (RoK) Navy. Each vessel will be equipped with two azimuth thrusters, designed and manufactured by Rolls-Royce. Azimuth thrusters are a configuration of a ship’s propeller that can rotate through 360 degrees on a vertical axis, providing greater maneuverability than a traditional propeller and rudder system. This $3.3m order follows a $7.2m order earlier this year to supply controllable pitch propellers for the RoK Navy’s prototype FFX frigate, the first of an initial batch of six ships. Lieutenant Commander, Lee Kwang Young, said “The four tugboats will be built in the Hanook Shipyard, with the first due to enter service in 2011.
