Need a Lift?

Not every ship repair facility has a drydock or marine railway. But thanks to a Sturgeon Bay, Wis.-based company, shipbuilders and repair yards from small to large can get a real lift. Marine Travelift builds boat hoists, self-propelled transporters, and marine forklifts, with more than 3,500 units delivered worldwide, and can be found at waterfronts all around the world. “Our boat hoists range from 15 ton all the way up to 1,000 ton capacity,” said Jason Johnson, North American sales manager. “Marine Travellift has been involved with shipyards since the 1980s.

On December 13, 2013 the 6,000 kW ASD tug Ocean Tundra was commissioned into service for its Owners, Ocean Group Inc. (Ocean) of Quebec City, Canada. This icebreaking escort tug becomes the most powerful tug in Canadian registry, and heralds a new generation of extremely capable tugs which will provide the highest degree of year-round escort towing capability to Canada’s east coast and the St. Lawrence River and Seaway system. Konecranes Deliver to Indonesian Container Terminal

Ten Konecranes Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes are now all running smoothly at Belawan International Container Terminal (BICT). Having received five RTGs previously, BICT now operates a fleet of fifteen Konecranes RTGs.These ten RTGs are technically very similar to the ones already delivered. When they change stack, for example, their wheels rotate while turning. This feature reduces wear on the rubber tires and the container yard compared to traditional solutions, extending the lifetime of the rubber tires and yard surface.

World's Largest Hover-Barge Sold

Marcon International, Inc. of Coupeville, Washington has announced the sale of the unfinished, newbuilding hover barge "Monty" by builder Sundial Marine Construction & Repair of Troutdale, Oregon. to private buyers. This unique hover or air cushion barge (ACB) was designed to hover about 5' above the surface while carrying about 450 tons of deck cargo on a clear deck of abt. 9,000ft2. Safety: Slip and Fall Accidents in the Marine Environment

Because the exposure to the marine environment and motions of a vessel, slips and falls are a significant source of personal injuries in floating equipment, probably substantially greater than most industry groups. Although there are a good number of publications, books and articles written regarding the subject of slip and falls, there are almost none addressing the conditions found in a marine environment, which influence slips and falls. The generally accepted industry standard is that a static anti-slip coefficient of friction of .50 or above is safe on a dry walkway surface. A value below .50 indicates an unsafe walkway surface.
