Forewind Scales Back World's Largest Offshore Wind Project Plans

Forewind has scaled back by a third plans to build wind farms at Dogger Bank in Britain's North Sea, which could nevertheless become the world's largest wind project, it said on Friday. Forewind -- a consortium of energy companies RWE Innogy UK, SSE, Statkraft and Statoil -- gave no specific reason for the decision. It had secured licenses from Britain's Crown Estate to build six projects at the Dogger Bank offshore zone of 1.2 gigawatts (GW) of electricity each. The government has given consent for farms to be built at four of the sites but Forewind said on Friday it would not seek consent for the fifth and six. EP Tools, CWind Win Nordsee Ost Contract

EP Tools, a Danish company with more than 15 years of experience in working with developers and construction companies in the wind and oil and gas industries, and CWind, a provider of services to the offshore wind industry, announced that they are to provide temporary power supply at NordSee Ost offshore wind farm in Germany. EP Tools will provide more than 50 generators while CWind is using its vessels and technicians to provide the project management, servicing, maintenance and refueling. Study Targets Reduced Offshore Wind Costs

Xodus Group, Cathie Associates and UTEC Geomarine have formed an industry leading consortium to deliver a study which will aim to reduce the costs of generating electricity from offshore wind farms in U.K. waters. The Carbon Trust’s Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA), which brings together nine offshore wind developers (DONG Energy, E.ON, Mainstream Renewable Power, RWE Innogy, ScottishPower Renewables, SSE Renewables, Statkraft, Statoil and Vattenfall) in a joint industry project, is working towards reducing the cost of offshore wind by at least 10% by 2015. Technology challenges are identified and prioritized by the OWA members based on the likely savings and the potential for the OWA to influence the outcomes.

Fugro Win Two Offshore Wind Farm Trenching Contracts

Fugro say they have been awarded two contracts to perform cable burial and survey operations at two wind farm sites in the UK. The first contract is for CT Offshore A/S at RWE Innogy's Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm located in Liverpool Bay off the North Wales coast. The work involves the burial and post-burial survey of 63 inter-array cables. The second contract is a similar work-scope at a wind-farm located off the UK East coast. The projects will run consecutively with work commencing in January and completing in the 3rd quarter of 2014.

UK's Huge Atlantic Array Wind Farm Project Dropped

Developer RWE Innogy is pulling the plug on the 240-turbine Atlantic Array project, report BBC News citing a  Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) source. The 222m (721ft) tall turbines, planned to be situated in an area 200 sq km, (77 sq miles) about 16.5km (10 miles) from the north Devon coast, 22.5km (14 miles) from south Wales coast and 13.5km (8 miles) from Lundy Island nature reserve, would be capable of producing enough electricity for up to 900,000 homes. Offshore Wind Farm Cable Landed Off Coast of Wales

Global Marine Energy lands first export cable from 'Cable Enterprise' at Gwynt y Môr 576 MW offshore wind farm. The cable was landed by GME’s recently launched vessel, Cable Enterprise, and is the first of four export cables to be installed at the project site. Each of the export cables are between 18km and 22km in length linking the north coast of Wales to the offshore wind farm in Liverpool Bay. Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm is one of the largest currently in construction in Europe and is being built by RWE npower renewables.

REW Innogy Names Offshore Turbine Installation Vessel

During a festive ceremony in Bremerhaven , RWE Innogy named one of its two offshore installation vessels. The vessel “Victoria Mathias” will build the wind farm “Nordsee Ost” around 30 kilometres north of the island of Heligoland from its base port Bremerhaven. Wind Power Seen Surging as Custom Barges Cut Cost

Offshore wind-power producers from Dong Energy A/S to RWE AG are building custom ships at record rates to reduce the cost of the technology which is  three times as pricey as electricity from coal plants. As many as 20 vessels, some with movable legs which reach the seafloor, will come onto the market in the next few years, reducing chartering costs of as much as 200,000 euros ($261,000) a day, said Marc Seidel, an offshore engineer at Suzlon Energy Ltd., which supplies turbines to Germany’s RWE. A lack of specialized installation ships has forced companies to hire barges designed for oil exploration, holding up work at projects such as EON AG’s Robin Rigg wind farm off Scotland’s western coast.

Offshore Renewable Energy: Servicing North Sea Wind Turbines

A boat with suspension, a giant robotic arm and a vessel resembling a seahorse are just three of the innovative concepts shortlisted by the Carbon Trust as part of a competition to solve the problem of transferring engineers and equipment safely on to wind turbines as far as 300km offshore in wave heights up to around three meters. The project aims to improve the economics of offshore wind by keeping turbines generating electricity in the harshest sea conditions to increase revenues by as much as £3bn for the next generation of the UK’s offshore wind farms.

Bolton Joins OMM as Director Ops & Maintenance

Subsea cable specialist, Offshore Marine Management (OMM) has strengthened its position in operation and maintenance with the recruitment of industry specialist, Stephen Bolton to the newly created position of Director of Operations and Maintenance. Stephen has more than 10 years experience in the emerging renewable energy market, in both the onshore and offshore wind sectors. His background includes his recent work as Offshore Operations Implementation Manager at RWE Innogy where he established one of the industry’s first dedicated teams to focus on the operations and maintenance methodology for large far shore wind farms on a portfolio basis. On establishing the strategy, he was responsible for its implementation on the Gwynt y Mor and Nord See Ost projects, among others.

The Carbon Trust is today launching a global competition to find world-leading solutions to the problem of transferring engineers and equipment safely from boats to wind turbines as far as 300km offshore in 3 metre wave heights. Jack-Up Crane Vessels, Wärtsilä-IMS Design

Wärtsilä, in consortium with IMS Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH, has been engaged by RWE Innogy, the renewable energy arm of the German utility company RWE, as its designer to provide the basic design and consultancy services for a jack up crane vessel. Two such vessels with GL class-approval have been ordered by RWE Innogy to be used for constructing offshore wind farms. The shipbuilding contracts have been awarded to Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME) and delivery of the vessels is scheduled for late 2011.
