UK-based Tekmar Energy has been selected as the cable protection system (CPS) and hang off supplier for the 120-MW Formosa I Phase II offshore wind project in Taiwanese waters.A press note from the company announced that it has received the order from subsea power cable provider JDR Cables, part of TFKable Group.Tekmar will be providing approximately 60 cable protection systems and a further 60 hang off clamps which hold the subsea cable in place within the turbine transition piece.Formosa 1 Phase 2 is a project located 6km from the shore of Taiwan, consisting of 20 turbines and will provide a total of 122 MW in water depth of approximately 15-30m.

Ron L. Phillips has been appointed Senior Vice President of Human Resources – Office of People and Potential for Carnival Cruise Line. In this capacity, Phillips will oversee shoreside and shipboard human resources for the world’s largest cruise line, including talent acquisition, talent management, leadership development, human capital planning, employee engagement, compensation and benefits, and performance management. Phillips begins his new role effective October 19 and will report to Carnival President Christine Duffy. The Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Guy Ryder, has called for a definitive and durable solution for the thousands of migrant workers who risk their lives in a search of a decent future. “Stopgap measures to halt the flows of migrants only scratch the surface of the problem. We need to go deeper into the root causes that force people to put their lives in danger in order to find work and security in foreign lands,” said Ryder. The overcrowded boat that capsized in the Mediterranean Sea on Wednesday likely resulting in many casualties is just the latest tragic incident that highlights the need for effective and urgent action, not just in this part of the world but in other migration corridors as well.

The U.S. military signaled on Friday it may allow warships to accompany other nations' vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran's seizure of a container ship this week prompted the Navy to start accompanying U.S.-flagged vessels.   "Our current plans are for accompanying U.S.-flagged ships, although there are discussions with other nations to include their vessels as well," said Colonel Patrick Ryder, a spokesman at the U.S. military's Central Command, declining to identify the other countries.     (Reporting by David Alexander, Writing by Phil Stewart)

The charity Beauchamp Lodge Settlement has been ordered to pay £3,330 in fines and costs after pleading guilty to operating a passenger vessel in London without a valid Passenger Certificate, the U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency reported. The vessel Beauchamp is a barge operated by the charity as a floating classroom for children and young people. It can also be hired for events, such as parties and weddings, and is capable of carrying up to 80 passengers as it travels along the Grand Union Canal.

The Government of Belgium deposited with the International Labor Office the instrument of ratification of the Maritime Labor Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) on 20 August 2013, a highly symbolic day marking the entry into force of the Convention. Belgium becomes the 46th ILO Member State and the 19th European Union member to have ratified this historic agreement which constitutes the fourth pillar of the international maritime legal regime, complementing the key Conventions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and providing decent working and living conditions for seafarers as well as conditions of fair competition for shipowners.

The Port of Hueneme held a Maritime Career Exploration Day at the Port on Wednesday. Attendees came to meet and talk with representatives of a half dozen companies doing business at the Port, groups that represented everything from a major shipping line to GAPS, an automobile processors. The event was held at the Port’s newly renovated Joint Operations and Security Center just outside the Port’s main entrance. As shipyards around the world struggle for business, Stena Bulk and Concordia Maritime confirmed an order of up to 10 in-house designed chemical tankers. The ships will be built at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China with deliveries beginning from spring 2014. When delivered, the 50,000-dwt vessels will be the most sophisticated in the Stena Bulk and Concordia Maritime fleet. The value of the order is $400 million if all ten ships are declared. The main task for the new ships is to cover the increasing demand for transportation capacity within the successful Stena Weco Pool.
