Orsel Takes the Helm as ECSA's First Female President

Karin Orsel has been appointed the first female President ever in the history of the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA), starting on January 1, 2024 for a two-year term, with Mikki Koskinen joining as the new Vice-President. She succeeds Philippos Philis, who has held the position since January 2022.Commenting on her appointment, new ECSA President Karin Orsel said, “The strategic role of European shipping for the security of the Europe has come to the forefront.

Electric Hybrid Vessel Electramar Delivered to AtoB@C

AtoB@C Shipping in mid-December took delivery of Electramar, the first vessel in its series of 12 highly energy-efficient plug-in hybrid vessels. These vessels reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50% compared to the present generation of vessels. ESL Orders Five More Hybrid-electric Bulk Carriers

ESL Shipping’s subsidiary AtoB@C Shipping informs it has declared an option to order for five additional hybrid-electric bulk carrier vessels from the Indian shipyard Chowgule & Company Private Limited, from which the shipping company has previously ordered seven identical vessels.Of the series of 12 new-generation electric hybrid vessels, every other vessel is sold to a company formed by a group of investors. ESL's AtoB@C Shipping Orders Six Hybrid-electric Bulkers

Sweden-based AtoB@C Shipping has ordered six energy-efficient hybrid-electric 5,350 dwt vessels from Chowgule and Company Private Limited shipyard in India.Total investment value of the six ships is approximately 70 million euros, according to AtoB@C, part of ESL Shipping. The order includes options for several additional ships.These new 1A ice class vessels are due for delivery starting from the third quarter of 2023.The design work of the ships and comprehensive model tests have been carried out together with the Dutch SMB Naval Architects.The greenhouse gas emissions

Now in its 39th edition, Europort continues to hold its own as one of the most significant events in the maritime calendar, with registered visitors this year reaching 27,000. In 2020, a new convention center will open alongside the existing site, expanding overall space by 50%.

ESL Shipping Buys Alppilan from SEB Leasing

Finland-based shipping company ESL Shipping, part of the ASPO Group, has acquired bulk carrier Alppila from SEB Leasing.The acquisition was made in accordance with the terms and conditions of the lease agreement signed in 2011, said the carrier of dry bulk cargoes in the Baltic region.Designed to meet the needs of ESL Shipping's customers, m/s Alppila is a self-unloading bulk carrier specially built for Baltic Sea operations.The bulk carrier is equipped for Finnish winter conditions and capable of operating even in the northernmost ports of the Baltic Sea.The length of the vessel is 156 meters and her maximum draft with a full cargo is 9.4 meters, said the company.The transfer of ownership will improve ESL Shipping’s profitability already for the second half of 2019.

AtoB@C Begins Towage in Port of Raahe

AtoB@C Shipping, a ship operator and logistics company, said that it would start to offer port towage and related services in Port of Raahe, Finland in August 2019.A press release from the wholly-owned subsidiary of the Finnish dry bulk shipping company ESL Shipping said that it offers the services equally to all vessels. Port towage and related services shall be offered 24/7 all year round.“Our long term presence in Port of Raahe provides an excellent base for also offering of towage services. We know the Port, it’s partners and the needs of vessel calling here in Raahe”, says Regional Manager Ari Hurula.Recently the size of ships calling Raahe has been increasing. This together with variating wind conditions effect the required assistance service level.

Finnish Flag for All ESL Vessels

Finland-based shipping company ESL Shipping, part of the ASPO Group, has decided to reflag its new LNG-fueled bulk carrier Haaga to the Finnish flag.According to the carrier of dry bulk cargoes in the Baltic region, the reflagging of the newbuilding Haaga is as a part of the agreement with unions. LNG REPORT: 143 LNG-Powered Vessels in Operation, 270 to Come

Currently, the liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered fleet has grown globally from 118 LNG-powered vessels in operation in 2017, to 143 LNG-powered vessels in operation – with a further 135 on order and 135 LNG-ready ships either in operation or on order.According to the LNG bunkering coalition SEA\LNG, Orders for LNG-powered vessels span a variety of vessel types including tankers, cruise ships, container ships, car carriers, and Very Large Ore Carriers (VLOC)s.A press note issued by Peter Keller, SEA\LNG Chairman revealed that in 2018, new LNG-fuelled vessels included ESL shipping’s delivery of its second LNG-fuelled 25,000 DWT bulker Haaga and Crowley’s combination container/roll on-roll off (ConRo) El Coquí.

LNG Bulk Carrier Viikki Starts Baltic Sea Ops

The world's most eco-friendly bulk carrier m/s Viikki, owned by ESL Shipping, a subsidiary of the Aspo Plc, has started operating on the Baltic Sea.The 25,600-dwt vessel, 160 metres long and fuelled by liquefied natural gas, produces less than half of the carbon dioxide of previous vessel generation, thanks to LNG and many advanced technologies.M/s Viikki was built in China, and after completion first sailed to Japan to load a cargo of raw materials. From there, she arrived to the Baltic Sea through the Northeast Passage, which shortened the journey from Japan by three weeks and reduced the emissions of the journey by 40 per cent compared with going through the Panama Canal."We are highly aware of the discussion about the environmental issues relating to the maritime industry.

AtoB@C Shipping Acquires Dry Cargo Carrier

The Swedish shipping company owned by Aspo's ESL Shipping, AtoB@C Shipping has acquired a 4,100 dwt dry bulk carrier of ice class 1A built in 2000. Previously, AtoB@C operated the vessel under a long-term time charter.The shipping company also owns the sister vessel of the newly acquired dry bulk carrier.This transaction improves the availability of vessel capacity ideal for customer contracts. It is expected to have a slight positive impact on profitability, but no significant impact on the balance sheet. The acquisition has been financed by using Aspo Group's existing financial instruments.Two months ago, ESL Shipping completed the acquisition of AtoB@C Shipping."Together we form a strong Nordic shipping company that is customer-driven.

Viikki Delivered to ESL Shipping

Finland’s ESL Shipping, an Aspo Group company, has taken delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled bulker Viikki from the Jinling shipyard in Nanjing, China.Viikki's sister ship Haaga was delivered on August 20. The 160-meter, LNG-fueled vessel of 25,600 dwt emits over 50 percent less carbon dioxide than the previous generation of vessels.Like its sister ship Haaga, Viikki will first head from the shipyard to Japan, from where it will arrive fully laden at the Baltic Sea approximately at the end of October. The plan is that both vessels will travel to the Baltic Sea via the Northern Sea Route.This shortens the travel time by nearly three weeks compared to the route via the Panama Canal and, therefore, significantly reduces the environmental impact of the trip.

Aspo's ESL Shipping Completes Acquisition of AtoB@C

ESL Shipping, a shipping company fully owned by Aspo has completed the transaction concerning the acquisition of all the outstanding shares of AtoB@C Shipping AB and AtoB@C Holding AB that offer shipping services.Total of 444,255 new Aspo's shares issued as part of the purchase price of the Transaction have been registered in the Finnish Trade Register today on 31 August 2018. After the registration of the new shares, the total number of shares in Aspo is 31,419,779.As announced earlier, the new shares were issued as share consideration in connection with the Transaction in addition to the cash consideration payable to the sellers and the shares are subject to a two-year transfer restriction and pledge.

ESL Shipping Takes Delivery of LNG-fueled Bulk Carrier

Finnish dry bulk shipping company ESL Shipping has taken delivery of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled bulk carrier named Haaga.The next-generation 25,600 dwt bulk carrier is 160 meters long and was delivered Monday to Aspo Group's ESL Shipping from Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing, China.LNG-fueled vessel generates less than 50% of the carbon dioxide emissions of the previous generation of vessels. The vessel can also be fueled by completely carbon-free biogas, once the availability of carbon-free biogas improves over time.The vessel incorporates several innovative solutions to reduce its environmental footprint by minimizing its energy consumption and emissions.

ESL Shipping Acquires AtoB@C

Finnish dry bulker ESL ShippingLtd, a shipping company fully owned by Aspo Group, is going to acquire all the outstanding shares of AtoB@C Shipping AB and AtoB@C Holding AB (AtoB@C) that offer shipping services. The enterprise value is EUR 30 million. The final purchase price will be mainly financed by Aspo's existing financing reserves, and approximately EUR 4.2 million will be covered by new shares issued by Aspo Plc. The transaction will require the competition authority's approval in Finland to be completed. It is estimated that the transaction will be completed in the third quarter of 2018. AtoB@C is engaged in the shipping business with 30 vessels in size of 4,000-5,000 tonnes. AtoB@C owns six dry cargo vessels in full, and it has a share of 49% of two vessels.

ESL Enters Smaller Vessel Class

As a part of its growth strategy, ESL Shipping has successfully entered into smaller vessel class with ice classed 3,000 dwt vessels. Baltic Carrier, Baltic Skipper and Capella joined the fleet in fall, and fourth vessel, Delfin, joined the fleet yesterday. These smaller vessels support the flexible customer service offered to existing customers, regardless of the transportation batch size, and enable ESL Shipping to expand its customer portfolio to new customers and material flows. In the operating model that is new to the shipping company, vessels will be chartered from the market for the transportation volumes. The most sought-after volumes include renewable bioenergy, recycled raw materials, such as recycled energy fuel or steel, wood-based products and grain.

Dual-Fuel Variant of MAN L23/30 Engine Awarded TAT

MAN Diesel & Turbo’s dual-fuel MAN L23/30DF engine successfully passed its Type Approval Test (TAT) at CSSC Marine Power (CMP) in Zhenjiang in front of the industry’s main classification societies. The five-cylinder test engine in China had an output of 125 kW per cylinder at a nominal speed of 720/750 rpm. Finn Fjeldhøj – Head of Small-Bore, Four-Stroke Engineering – MAN Diesel & Turbo, expressed the company’s high expectations for the engine and said: “The L23/30DF covers a power range of 625 – 1,200kW, which makes it particularly attractive for such ocean-going vessels as bulkers of most sizes, general cargo ships, chemical tankers, and smaller LNG-carriers, as well as ships operating in ports and near the coast.

Viikki, the new eco-friendly dry cargo vessel of ESL Shipping, part of Aspo Plc, was successfully launched today at the Jinling shipyard in Nanjing, China. “The longstanding work in this project becomes concrete today when we see the vessel floating for the first time. There is still a lot of work ahead before her delivery, but I’m confident that we will get a superb vessel tailored to our needs”, comments Captain Jussi Vaahtikari. Viikki is the first LNG-powered handyzise bulk carrier in the world and is a forerunner in energy efficiency and eco-friendliness.
