Defence and security company Saab has received an order from Rijkswaterstaat for delivery of an AIS (Automatic Identification System that will add to safety on the Dutch waterways. The contract secures Saab to provide the complete technical system solution within the DIAMONIS project (Dutch Inland AIS Monitoring System). Saab has forged a partnership with the local company Tein Telecom, which will be responsible for implementing the project locally, providing 24/7 support and more. The delivery comprises approximately 40 AIS base stations, a network solution and a web-based presentation system. Valued at over SEK 20 million the contract includes a number of future options, such as a possibel expansion of the system.

Saab TransponderTech AB has been awarded a contract from the Romanian Naval Authority to upgrade and expand the country’s Automatic Identification System (AIS) network along the Black Sea Coast. Under the contract, Saab will deliver, install and commission four new AIS base stations along the Black Sea Coast. The AIS base stations will be integrated with the Vessel Traffic Management and Information System (VTMIS) in the Romanian Naval Authority headquarters in Constanta. The system will exchange AIS data and be integrated with the existing Romanian River Information System (RORIS), which was earlier supplied by Saab. RORIS utilizes AIS and other sensors to provide VTMIS coverage over the Romanian portion of the Danube waterway.

Trimble and Saab TransponderTech AB are cooperating to integrate their differential GPS (DGPS) solutions for enhanced marine navigation. Saab and Trimble will integrate their marine navigation solutions to deliver DGPS error correction messages to ships at sea through automatic identification system (AIS) coast stations and networks. The DGPS messages transmitted on AIS frequencies will augment the existing marine DGPS broadcasts from coastal beacon stations. The two companies are collaborating to develop interfaces connecting Saab's AIS and Vessel Tracking Management & Information System (VTMIS) with Trimble DGPS reference station and integrity monitoring software.

Saab TransponderTech has together with its partner Saab Rousemont Marine received orders from Daewoo shipyard in Korea to supply Daewoo Hull Numbers 5178 / 5179 - Oak Maritime 105K TDW Crude Oil Tankers with AIS. These are the first AIS orders for newbuildings in Korea directly placed by a shipyard, and more are to come in the near future. Also, Consilium Marine has ordered five AIS transponders for National Iranian Tanker Company to be built at Dalian New Shipyard in China. These are the first AIS orders for newbuildings in China. Kongsberg Maritime, Nera, STN-Atlas and Kelvin Hughes have also recently placed orders with Saab TransponderTech for AIS transponders to be delivered in November.

Saab TransponderTech AB and Navielektro ky, the provider of state of the art VTMS solutions, decided to cooperate in promoting their products for the VTMS and Coastal Surveillance Systems market. The two companies will offer VTMS and Costal Surveillance systems for the Maritime Administration and Port Administrations of the world. The team has had a long co-operation in the field of AIS system Technology and was the first in the market to supply a system for fusion of AIS and radar tracks.

Sweden-based Saab TransponderTech AB has recently received two prestigious orders to China via STN-Atlas. Following an order by STN-Atlas for a VTS system in Kvitsøy, Norway, earlier this year, Saab TransponderTech has now also won an order for several R30 AIS Base Stations for the VTS system in Huangha and Majisuan in China. With these orders, Saab TransponderTech establishes itself as the leading Automatic Identification System (AIS) supplier in the Far East. In Majisuan, the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) system is already under construction and will allow the important ability to identify, track and serve all commercial vessels in the area carrying AIS-equipment.

The events of September 11, 2001 will continue to have lingering effects on the world indefinitely. The most visible remnant in the maritime world is the drastically heightened sense of safety and security, as officials in countries around the globe seek to secure their borders from the threat of attack — either direct or covert — via ship. Many of the issues currently on the legislative fast track were already in the works pre-September 11. False crew documentation, enhanced vessel tracking and beefed-up harbor controls were much-discussed topic in previous years. As is the case more often than not, though, a disaster of some proportion is inevitably the impetus in moving from discussion to action.

World’s first Automatic Identification System (AIS) type approval is given to Saab TransponderTech AB by German test house “Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie” (BSH). AIS, the system made mandatory by International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in SOLAS chapter V, regulation 19, has been given its first type approval. AIS is the new system that many see as the most important revolution in maritime safety and security since Radar and GPS were introduced. Saab TransponderTech was given the first type approval by BSH in Germany, on AIS according to the international standards and requirements. BSH is today considered to be the only test house with capacity and competence to test AIS.

On October, 23-27 Transas Europe GmbH will take part in Euronaval 2006 exhibition, which is now one of the leading international trade fairs for naval defense. During the show Transas will demonstrate its up-to-date Navi-Sailor 3100 ECDIS, the first one in the world to have been adapted to naval needs. This product results from Transas’ long standing experience in the field of marine navigational systems, software and electronic vector cartography, and is capable of meeting the demands and requirements of the professional navigator. Last year Transas Europe GmbH became the part of the winning team to supply a new suite of Navigation systems to the entire German Navy fleet.

Saab TransponderTech AB, being the first to have its AIS System type approved by BSH, recently reported the delivery of their 500th Transponder during 2002 to the marine market. This makes them by far the biggest supplier of AIS. At the same time, 500 AIS systems come into another light when taking into account the high pressure due to the time schedule of the implementation of AIS: With approximately 6,000 SOLAS vessels to be fitted out with AIS-systems during the next 10 months, there is a high demand. All existing tankers, approximately 11,000, have to carry AIS not later than that first safety equipment audit after July 1, 2003. IMO will decide on an earlier date for mandatory carriage for all SOLAS vessel.

At the Nor-Shipping exhibition held in Oslo in June, the the Radio Holland Group management signed a contract with Saab TransponderTech, for the distribution and service of the Saab R4 AIS system by all Radio Holland Group branches. The R4 AIS is manufactured by Saab TransponderTech AB and is is the fourth generation of Saab AIS. The R4 Class A Transponder System is type-approved with wheelmark and complies with all international standards for AIS ship systems. Saab is also providing free Seagull computer based training software with every AIS system, training seafarers how to use the AIS equipment. Radio Holland Greece has also announce that as of April 20, they have been approved by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance to the quality management system standard BS EN ISO 9001: 2000.

Transas Europe GmbH, the European representative of Transas Group, is part of the team that will supply a new suite of navigational systems to the entire German Navy fleet. The contract to equip all the German Navy ships was awarded to a group of companies led by ET Marinesysteme GmbH as prime contractor, an equally shared joint venture between EADS and Thales. The final contract was raised by the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) and signed in September 2005 for the system supply to start later this year and to be completed in 2009. The navigational suite for almost 100 ships will consist of Transas Navi-Sailor 3000 ECDIS, (U)AIS-Transponders of Saab Transpondertech AB and navigational ARPA Radars, supplied by Sperry Marine BV.
