Long Beach Port Appoints 4 Executives

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners continued to fill key positions in Harbor Department leadership ranks this week with four additional appointments of experienced executives to oversee Port of Long Beach operations. The four professionals all have long and valuable experience in their fields of engineering, maintenance and finance, and come from outside the Port of Long Beach. Two of the positions are newly created and two were vacated earlier this year. Duane Kenagy has been appointed to the newly created position of Capital Programs Executive to oversee the Port’s capital improvement program and will report directly to the Chief Executive.

John Garamendi Advocates 'Buy America' T-HUD Amendments

Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, CA) has offered amendments to the FY 2015 Transportation Housing and Urban Development (T-HUD) Appropriations Act that would spur the growth of U.S. jobs by strengthening Buy America laws. The Congressman expressed the view that the requirement that federal taxpayer dollars are spent on U.S. manufacturing is currently too weak causing the outsourcing of thousands of jobs. Garamendi’s amendments would close loopholes in the law, so that money invested in public works would stay at home. While Garamendi fought to create American jobs and boost economic growth, the Appropriations bill itself would take this nation in the opposite direction, he felt.

Admiral Engages Engineering Class During Sacramento Navy Week

Commander, Regional Maintenance Centers and the Navy's flag ambassador for Sacramento Navy Week engaged an engineering class at , on March 12. Rear Adm. John Clarke Orzalli, commander, Regional Maintenance Centers visited the university to talk about his lifelong passion in engineering and problem solving. "Something happens and we need to figure out why and develop solution models so it doesn't happen again," said Orzalli. Students in the Thermodynamics class found out early on that having a guest speaker was not going to be a free period. The admiral wasted no time immersing the entire class in science and engineering theory that made the majority of them sit up and engage the him for over an hour.
