Rotork Acquires Masso

Rotork announced it has acquired Masso Ind s.p.a., a manufacturer of shipboard valve remote control systems (VRCS), to enhance its range of flow control products and services for the worldwide marine and offshore industries. Masso VRCS solutions include hydraulic and electro-hydraulic systems that are compatible with most integrated automation systems required for critical safety applications. The Masso product range also includes hydraulic quarter-turn and linear actuators, hydraulic power packs, solenoid cabinets and electro-hydraulic actuators for shipboard applications.

Iridium Launches Portable Satellite Hotspot

Iridium Communications Inc. today announced Iridium GO!, the industry’s first portable satellite hotspot that connects to any smartphone or tablet, dramatically extending voice and data coverage for personal devices when they are out of range of cellular networks. Iridium GO! creates a satellite-backed Wi-Fi zone anywhere on the planet, enabling up to five smartphones to make calls, get their email, text and use some apps, even when terrestrial networks are non-existent, unreliable or costly.

WTS Acquires Novenco Fire Fighting A/S

Wilhelmsen Technical Solutions acquires speialist in water-mist technology, Novenco Fire Fighting A/S. “The acquisition of this niche player in water mist technology further strengthens our safety portfolio, taking us an important step closer to becoming the world’s leading fire fighting provider in the maritime and offshore industries” says Petter Traaholt, President Wilhelmsen Technical Solutions (WTS). NFF is purchased from a private equity fund managed by Dania Capital. NFF exports over 90% of its products to customers in more than 26 countries; its main markets are Asia, followed by Europe and the US. This customer portfolio will expand WTS’ customer base for safety applications in cruise and yacht particularly.

Global Seatrade to install se@FLEX

Heavy-lift specialist is first customer to sign up for new flat-rate global coverage VSAT service package. Globecomm Systems Inc., a global provider of communications solutions and services, announced today that Global Seatrade, a unit of the Hartman Marine Group, has awarded it a contract for unified maritime communications. Services will be provided by Mach6, a unit of Globecomm Maritime, using its global VSAT platform, which provides automatic roaming between Ku-band satellite beams on a global basis at a flat rate. The contract was awarded in October.

New Australian Nav Equip Standard

The Australian Transport Council (ATC) of Ministers this month approved the new national safety standard for navigation equipment. The National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part C, Subsection 7C – Navigation Equipment replaces those parts of USL Code Section 13; Miscellaneous Equipment, pertaining to navigation equipment. The National Marine Safety Committee (NMSC) technical team developed the standard in consultation with the marine industry over a two-year period, often covering innovative equipment introduced since the last update of the USL Code in 1984. NMSC’s Acting CEO John Henry noted that much has changed in the field of electronic navigation equipment since the USL Code was published.

ABB to Provide Control Systems for Australia

ABB was selected by all four contractors – Maersk, APL, Aibel and Keppel – to supply integrated control and safety systems (ICSS) for the subsea production units and the topside process module on the floating production and storage off-loading vessel (FPSO). The systems will be integrated into a single control and safety system operated from the FPSO. The solution is based on ABB’s automation platform, Extended Automation System 800xA, which is the leading process automation system for the oil and gas industry worldwide. The high integrity, safety instrumented system enables process and safety applications to be executed within the same system and, if required, from the same controller.

Golar LNG Invests in System to Promote Safety

Responding to global demands for heightened environmental responsibility, ship safety and the desire to drive increased efficiency and profitability, Golar LNG will install the Task Assistant TM suite of maritime software from Ulysses Systems on all company vessels and in land-based offices. Task Assistant TM will provide planned maintenance, purchasing, crewing, and quality and safety applications to Golar. "We were looking for a system that would ensure maximum safety at sea and environmental protection whilst maintaining and improving operational efficiency - we considered Task Assistant to satisfy these requirements," explained Graham Griffiths, General Manager Fleet, Golar LNG Ltd.
