Rescue 21 Achieves 'SOLAS' Declaration from DHS

The U.S. Coast Guard is declaring 'Sea Area A1' service in certain areas off the coast of the United States based on the performance of the General Dynamics-built Rescue 21 system. The declaration is in accordance with provisions of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea and follows testing and analysis by the Coast Guard, validating that Rescue 21 provides more than 90 percent coverage for Very High Frequency (VHF) radio distress communications and digital selective calling. Sea Area A1 comprises more than 215,000 square nautical miles including the nation's eastern, western and Gulf coastlines (excluding Alaska) and extends 20 nautical miles out to sea.

Viking Acquires Hygrapha

Global marine and fire safety equipment manufacturer Viking Life-Saving Equipment A/S has agreed to acquire Hygrapha GmbH & Co. The move sees the two former competitors joining forces to strengthen capabilities, with a strong strategic presence in Germany, where the deal will be a significant win for shipowners looking for global safety solutions. Mobilarm Launches Crewsafe

Australian marine safety specialist Mobilarm launched Crewsafe, a unique onboard wireless network with Man Overboard functionality at the 2008 International Workboat Show, Dec. 3-5. Mobilarm Crewsafe is a wireless safety network that provides marine employee safety and security through crew location monitoring and by automatically initiating a network-wide alert to all personnel within seconds of an incident occurring. "Each employee carries a palm-sized transceiver - a Tag - whose wireless signal keeps them connected to the network via a series of wireless routers.

AFRAS to Hold Award Ceremony on October 7

On October 7 in Washington, D. C., the Association for Rescue at Sea (AFRAS), will award its Gold Medal and a cash prize to United States Coast Guardsman Roman D. Baligad, Aviation Survival Technician Second Class for a heroic rescue on 30 December, 2002. AFRAS will also present its AMVER plaque to the captain and crew of the Japanese-flagged ship M/V AUTOMOBIL ACE for exceptional humanitarian service in a rescue at sea. The award ceremony and reception will be co-hosted by The Honorable Howard Coble, co-Chairman, U.S. Congressional Coast Guard Caucus. The Gold Medal awardee – Roman D. Baligad - is cited for heroic achievement while serving as rescue swimmer aboard helicopter CGNR 6533 out of CG Air Facility Newport, OR.
