The confidential and impartial incident and near-miss reporting scheme CHIRP Maritime has released its analysis of maritime reports received between April 2022 and March 2023.A key outcome of the analysis of reported incidents was the identification of inadequate leadership and supervision as a contributing factor. Howard Fireman, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, joined the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) in 2013. There is increasing emphasis from regulators on addressing uncertainty in risk assessments to improve safety. DNV GL’s new paper, ‘Enabling confidence – addressing uncertainty in risk assessments’, describes an improved risk management approach to achieve adequate safety levels whilst keeping costs under control. The new approach has been developed in collaboration with the University of Stavanger, Norway, and reflects recent developments in the risk science community. The paper is aligned with the thinking of the PSA in Norway, ISO 31000 and the Society for Risk Analysis. Marine services company Harley Marine Services (HMS) has expanded its management team, naming Don Martin as Vice President and General Counsel and Steve Carlson as Vice President of Engineering, the company announced today. DNV GL is relocating its oil and gas head office in Norway from Høvik to Stavanger in order to be even closer to its customers, the company said. Local delivery capacity will be expanded in Stavanger and Bergen and operations will continue in Høvik, Sandefjord, Trondheim and Harstad. The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) has added a seminar on port security to its industry-leading schedule of education and training programs. This AAPA Security Seminar, the third in two years, is set for July 30 through Aug. 1 at the Sheraton Los Angeles Harbor in San Pedro, Calif. "With security being by far the No. 1 priority for seaports today, we believe it is vital that we dedicate an entire 2½-day seminar to the myriad issues surrounding port security," said Kurt J. Nagle, President of the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA).
