Vietnam Welcomes World's Largest Container Ship

CMIT Welcomes Vietnam PM

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc visited Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT) on July 21st, becoming the first container terminal in the Cai Mep area, part of Saigon Port, to receive the Vietnamese Head of State. CMIT is a joint venture between APM Terminals, which holds a 49% share, Vietnam National Shipping Lines, with a 36% share, and Saigon Port, with a 15% share. Prime Minister Phuc was welcomed by CMIT acting Managing director Nguyen Xuan Ky, who expressed the facility’s appreciation to the Vietnamese national and provincial governments, and the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport for supporting policies which have led to the success of the deep-water port complex.

Asia Key to Recovery of Containerized Trade

Asian economies are leading the recovery of international container trade volumes, but strong growth across the region could see pre-recession pressure on freight infrastructure re-emerge, a senior executive of container shipping line APL told a conference in Ho Chi Minh City on May 20. “Intra-Asia is already the world’s single largest container trade,” Jason Wong, Vice President of APL’s Intra Asia trade, told the 8th ASEAN Ports & Shipping Conference. By 2015, Intra Asia will contribute 32% of global containerised trade, with the Asia-U.S. and Asia-Europe trades 17% and 18% respectively, according to analyst Global Insight. APL Alexandrite First Call, Cai Mep Port

The ship APL Alexandrite became the first linehaul container vessel to call at the Saigon Port-PSA (SP-PSA) deepwater container terminal located on the Cai Mep river in Ba Ria Vung Tau Province in southern Vietnam. The 3,821 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) vessel was undertaking a trial voyage ahead of the beginning on 4 June of the industry’s first direct container shipping service linking Vietnam and the West Coast of North America. APL, Direct Vietnam to North America Service

Global shipping leader APL announced the launch of a new weekly direct container shipping service linking Vietnam and the West Coast of North America. Previously, Vietnam’s exporters have had to rely on small feeder vessels to connect with larger ships to gain access to the world’s major consuming markets. The first departure of the APL-operated service on 4 June will directly link Vietnam’s exporters to the Transpacific routes, which are among the world’s largest and most dynamic trade lanes. “This is the beginning of a new era for trade with Vietnam and marks its increased importance as a manufacturing and export centre,” said Eng Aik Meng, President of APL. In early 2007, APL co-authored research examining Vietnam’s transportation and logistics environment.

Wärtsilä Opens Service Workshop in Vietnam

Inauguration of the new Wärtsilä workshop in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Mr Clas-Eirik Strand, Chairman of the board of Wärtsilä Vietnam, cuts the ribbon. Wärtsilä Corporation opened a new, fully-equipped service workshop close to Saigon port in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This is part of Wärtsilä's development of its business activities in the Vietnamese shipping, shipbuilding and power industries. Wärtsilä recently opened a new branch office in Hanoi. Wärtsilä has had a permanent presence in Vietnam since 1994 when it set up a representative office in Ho Chi Minh City. In 1998 Wärtsilä obtained a business licence to operate as a 100% foreign-owned service company and founded Wärtsilä Vietnam Co Ltd.
