While the adoption of unmanned/uncrewed surfaces vessels (USVs) was initially in defence, use of these low footprint systems has spread into other sectors, not least survey, and now the race is on for greater capability, endurance and autonomy. New Milestones for America’s Newest Tall Ship

The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a stability letter to America’s newest tall ship for operation on exposed waters, confirming that SSV Oliver Hazard Perry exceeds their most stringent Sailing School Vessel standards for stability. This assures that the vessel is on track to begin offshore ocean voyaging in early 2017 following the successful near-shore sailing achieved this past summer. The first scheduled offshore passage will be south from Rhode Island to Florida, starting in January 2017. The 200-foot, three-masted, full rigged ship is currently dry-docked in North Kingstown, R.I. at J.

SSV Oliver Hazard Perry Scheduled for Newport Appearance

Fundraiser, dedication ceremony and public visits to highlight ship’s visit over July 4 weekend. It’s not just Rhode Island but the whole of North America that is watching as the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry becomes a reality. The 196-foot, three-masted, square rigged tall ship, currently under construction and designated by the legislature and the Governor of Rhode Island as the state’s official “Sailing Education Vessel,” is well on its way to becoming the largest civilian sail training vessel in North America and the first oceangoing full-rigged ship to be built in the U.S. in over 100 years.

New Manhattan Sailing School

Offshore Sailing School has signed an agreement with Liberty Landing NYC at Hudson River Park's Pier 25 in Manhattan's Tribeca area. The New York sailing school will provide sailing lessons and sailing courses for area residents and visitors starting May 15, 2012 at this new location. A long time tenant of Liberty Landing Marina in Liberty State Park on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River, Offshore Sailing School brings sailing lessons for adults, teens and youngsters to lower Manhattan with plans to expand with a sailing club and community sailing offers. Courses offered in the initial stages are the three-day and five-day Learn to Sail courses. Performance Sailing courses will also be available, as well as two-hour sailing lessons.

Alternative Hull Exam Program

The U.S. Coast Guard has established an alternative hull examination program for certain U.S. passenger vessels. It is also giving nautical school, offshore supply, passenger, and sailing school vessels the option of alternating drydock examinations with underwater surveys. Finally, it is giving industry additional latitude in scheduling inspections, creating parity between passenger vessels and all other Coast Guard-inspected vessels. The rule comes into effect on September 7, 2004. 69 Fed. Reg. 47378 (August 5, 2004).

Alternative Hull Examination for Certain Vessels

The U.S. Coast Guard has issued an interim rule establishing an alternative hull examination program for certain passenger vessels. Nautical school, offshore supply, passenger, and sailing school vessels will have the option of alternating drydock examinations with underwater surveys. These vessels will also have additional latitude in scheduling inspections. The interim rule comes into effect on June 28, 2002

USCG Publishes Notice on Alternate Hull Examination Program

The U.S. Coast Guard has published a notice stating that, effective August 28, 2002, the information collection requirements of the agency's recent regulation relating to the alternate hull examination program for certain U.S. passenger vessels and underwater surveys for nautical school, offshore supply, passenger, and sailing school vessels came into effect.
