Japanese shipping company NYK ordered its first liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dual-fueled very large gas carriers (VLGCs), a pair of ships to be built at Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ Sakaide Works shipyard for delivery in 2022.According to NYK, the new VLGCs will comply not only with the SOx Global Cap regulations that were tightened from January 2020 but also with the EEDI phase 3 requirements.In addition, by equipping the ships with LPG tanks on deck, it will be possible to load LPG for fuel separately from the LPG cargo.

A naming ceremony was held for Japan’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel at Kawasaki Heavy Industries' Sakaide Works shipyard, on Wednesday.The ship, named Kaguyais, the first LNG bunkering vessel to be operated in Japan. Kaguya will be operated by Central LNG Marine Fuel Japan Corporation and will be based at JERA's Kawagoe Thermal Power Station. Kaguya will begin supplying LNG fuel to ships in the Chubu region in October or later this year using ship-to-ship bunkering.The 81.7-meter-long vessel was named by Yukikazu Myochin, President of Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd.

Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) diverts more shipbuilding work to its joint-venture yards in China, local media says. According to a report in Nikkei, KHI will step up commercial shipbuilding in China and scale down production in Japan to improve cost competitiveness as the market rebounds from a yearslong slump. The Japanese firm plans a 50% capacity boost at a shipyard in Dalian, Liaoning Province, that builds mainly large ships, including tankers and bulk carriers. The facility is jointly operated with China Ocean Shipping (Group) Co., also known as Cosco. More than 20 billion yen ($176 million) will be invested at the site, including construction of a second dock about 550 meters long.

A new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier jointly owned by NYK and Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc. (KEPCO) was officially named LNG Sakura during a ceremony at the Sakaide shipyard of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. NYK and Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (KEPCO) have agreed to joint ownership of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier through a vessel-owner company shared by the two companies: NYK 30 percent, KEPCO 70 percent.   The vessel is being built at the Sakaide shipyard of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. and upon completion in late 2017 will be assigned to the Cove Point LNG project in the United States to transport LNG for 20 years.   The new ship will be equipped with a dual-fuel diesel electric propulsion engine that reduces fuel consumption over that of a conventional steam turbine engine. Moreover, the vessel suppresses the boil-off rate of the LNG in the cargo tank to 0.08 percent of tank volume per day.   The co-ownership is the first between NYK and KEPCO.

Two joint-venture companies that NYK has established with Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc. each concluded a time-charter contract for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier with Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc. In addition, one of the joint-venture companies, Trans Pacific Shipping 6 Limited, concluded a shipbuilding contract with MI LNG Company Limited,* and other joint-venture company, Trans Pacific Shipping 7 Limited, concluded a shipbuilding contract with Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. These new ships will be managed by NYK after being delivered in 2018 and assigned to transport LNG for a 20-year period from the Freeport LNG Project, in which Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc. has an equity interest.

ALMACO Group informs it has been awarded the design, material supply and supervision contract from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. In March 2014, KHI contracted ALMACO Group to deliver the design, material supply and supervision for the catering areas, inclusive galley, provision stores, refrigeration machinery and mess rooms, located on the hull of the first drillship, Ondina. The expected delivery date for this work is end of 2015. Earlier this year, ALMACO received the repeat order for the second drill unit, Pituba, with the expected delivery of mid of 2016. Kawasaki’s Sakaide Shipyard is building the hull parts of these units, which will later be transported to Enseada’s site in Brazil for installation of other segments, such as the topside equipment.
