World's First: Japanese Firms to Looking to Build Sustainable Bulk Carriers for Copper Transport from Chile

Japan's NYK Line said Thursday its NYK Bulk & Project Carriers Ltd. (NBP), Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (OSHIMA), and Sumitomo Corporation (SUMITOMO) had signed a memorandum of understanding to study, design, and construct the world’s first Handymax bulk carrier (ammonia dual fuel type) dedicated to the transport of copper products, that will reduce CO2 emissions to zero.The MoU signing comes just a year after Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (CODELCO), a Chilean state-owned company and one of the world's leading copper producers, and NYK Bulk & Project Carriers Ltd.

American Cruise Lines Hires Young as Business Development Director

American Cruise Lines on Wednesday announced Susan Shultz-Gelino, Vice President of Trade Relations, has retired after several decades with the company, and that Melissa Young has joined the company as Director of Business DevelopmentShultz-Gelino began her career in travel with American Cruise Lines in the 1980s. Among her many achievements, she established and led American’s sales department to record numbers through the company’s early years. Shultz-Gelino developed strong trade partnerships industry-wide and also established a growing team of Business Development Managers.

ME Production Strengthens Sales Team

As a consequence of continued growth, Danish scrubber specialist ME Production has strengthened its sales team and established a new scrubber service department.The sales department at ME Production has been expanded with new sales manager Mr. Lars Duhn, who joined the company in August. Duhn has previously worked for a range of leading maritime companies, including Alfa Laval, and brings years of valuable industry knowledge and sales experience with him.ME Production is not only expanding its sales organization but has also recently established a new scrubber service department.

MAN, Hyundai to Develop LPG Dual-fuel Engines

MAN Diesel & Turbo said it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD) for the development and production of MAN B&W ME-LGIP dual-fuel engines. Upon completion, HHI-EMD will be able to deliver liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuelled, two-stroke-propulsion engines. With the MoU, LPG joins the list of liquid, environmentally-friendly fuels that can power MAN Diesel & Turbo’s portfolio of two-stroke, dual-fuel engines, which are available from all licensees.

India, Ukraine to Partner in Shipbuilding

A Ukrainian delegation led by its Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade Ms. Nataliya Mykolska, met Secretary, Ministry of Shipping Shri Ravikant in New Delhi  to discuss the potential for developing sustainable partnership between the two countries in the area of shipbuilding. Giving an overview of ship building industry in their country, the Ukrainian delegation invited senior officials of the Ministry of Shipping to visit Odessa and Kiev to study the logistic chain and shipbuilding yards in particular. Secretary, Shipping Shri Ravikant invited Ukraine to send a group-cum-business delegation to visit Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). CSL is one of the major civilian shipyards in India and has been amongst the biggest in the country.

Damen CEO Berkvens Receives CEMT Award

The Council of the Confederation of European Maritime Technology Societies presented Damen CEO René Berkvens with the CEMT Award on Thursday, August 24, at Damen Shipyards Gorinchem. The Council bestows the award annually in recognition of the substantial contribution made to the success of the European maritime industry by an individual, company or organization. The contribution can be either technological, political or economic. Berkvens received the award in recognition of his leadership of Damen and the contribution this has made toward the successes of the European maritime sector.

Chandrasekharan Joins Viking SeaTech

Viking SeaTech said it has appointed Kiran Chandrasekharan to a newly created post of naval architect at its base in Aberdeen. Chandrasekharan, who has more than seven years’ experience, specializes in permanent mooring design. Prior to joining Viking SeaTech he worked as naval architect and mooring engineer for London Marine Consultants Ltd. The new position was created to provide technical support and to assist in the commercial evaluation of tenders and proposals. Chandrasekharan will also help plan, analyze and deliver project activities.

Klaus Andreasen Joins the Bawat Team

Bawat has hired Klaus Andreasen as Senior Sales Manager effective as of September 1, 2016. He will be the new man in charge of Bawat’s sales department and will be the customer’s primary contact.   Andreasen has several years of experience from Alfa Laval, where he held different positions as manager most recent, head of Alfa Laval’s industry aftermarket for customers. Previously he has been in charge of new buildings in both Maersk and TORM where he gained unique knowledge and experience within shipbuilding, ship operating and execution of shipbuilding projects.

Fednav (Belgium) N.V. Celebrates its 50th Anniversary

Shortly after the inauguration of the Saint Lawrence Seaway in 1959, and the growth of grain exports that followed, bulk shipper Fednav realized that incoming steel products offered ideal repositioning from Belgium, and thus was launched regular service FALLine. Steel is also transported from Germany, the U.K. and other countries, but Antwerp remained the epicenter of the activity. Located in the Scheldt estuary, Antwerp is the breakbulk port of choice due to its central position, its connections to the Rhine and its experienced stevedores. Initially, and for many years served as general Colbelfret and sales agent for the company. From the beginning, the company decided a Fednav office in Antwerp was required and in June 1966 the Federal Commerce & Navigation (Belgium) SA was incorporated.

Chevron Announces Alliance with Petrol Ofisi

VSTEP Appoint New Head of Sales

The European Port Community Systems Association (EPCSA) is determined to keep its focus on the important issues and maintain close contact with officers and decision-makers in the European Commission, according to the association’s new chairman and vice-chairman. New Finance Manager at Ulstein Verft

Sindre Rotevatn (51) has been appointed finance manager and deputy managing director of Ulstein Verft AS. He will take up the position in November. “I am looking forward to joining ULSTEIN and to my new role as finance manager and deputy managing director of Ulstein Verft,” says Sindre Rotevatn. He comes from the position as Senior Vice President Business Process Improvement in Saferoad Group, where he previously held the position as CFO. Rotevatn also has several years of experience as finance manager in Ørsta-gruppen, Ørsta Stål and Møremøbler, in addition to experience from banking.
