Konrad Marine has launched several iterations of its signature sterndrive since unveiling its first units in the 1990s. Konrad’s latest lineup, the 600B series, was rolled out in 2014, with the first drives delivered to customers at the start of 2015 and strong market uptake ever since. Featuring the larger gears first introduced in its 600 series, Konrad’s 600B drives also include a new larger transom with integrated steering.“The biggest change when we developed the 600B series drive was our heavy-duty transom assembly,” says Fred Sparling, senior application engineer.

DMC Wins Suppy Contract From Cape Arkona

Damen Marine Components (DMC), the manufacturer of rudder and steering systems, nozzles, winches and controls, said that it has won a contract to supply a steering system for the trawler Cape Arkona.Currently in build at the Baatbygg yard at Måløy in western Norway for Austral Fisheries, the 1,150m³ vessel is capable of alternating between operating as a freezer trawler, long liner and a potter vessel, all within the period of a single trip.According to a press note, DMC will be supplying the 70-metre vessel with a Van der Velden TIMON flap rudder with heal bearing and a Van der Velden COMMANDER rotary vane steering gear.The slim-profile TIMON flap rudder is a popular and proven system which delivers superior maneuvering and course-keeping performance compared to conventional rudders.

In US Gulf, Robots, Drones Take on Dangerous Offshore Oil Work

At BP's massive Thunder Horse oil platform in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, a dog-sized robot called Maggie uses magnetic tracks to creep along pipes connecting the giant oil facility to the sea floor. Before MaggHD, dubbed "Maggie" by BP, the dangerous inspection job was reserved for highly paid specialist technicians who did their jobs while rappelling along the platform. With a longstanding history of ferry operation in the Puget Sound, Washington State Ferries (WSF) was in need of a coatings company with just as strong of a reputation when preserving the 3,634-ton M/V Kaleetan auto/passenger ferry in the summer of 2015. Built in 1967 in San Diego, Calif., the M/V Kaleetan – which means “arrow” in Chinook – first went into service in early 1968 and was rebuilt in 2005.

Subsea Industries has strengthened its presence in the U.K.’s maritime and renewable energy sectors with opening up of a dedicated marine and offshore coatings office in the U.K. and the appointment of coatings specialist Mark Woods as its U.K.-based technical representative. The new office forms part of Subsea Industries’ wider growth strategy to meet increased demand for the company’s award-winning non-toxic hard coatings. As accounting manager, Woods will head up Chelmsford-based Subsea Industries U.K., with responsibility for sales growth across the company’s complete portfolio of marine coatings. Damen Partners with TeamTec for BWTS

Damen Green Solutions has signed a letter of intent with Norwegian company TeamTec to supply and service the AVITALISTM ballast water treatment system. The system combines filtration and a proven, eco-friendly chemical treatment solution optimized for medium-sized to large vessels. The system is highly effective in water of any salinity, turbidity or temperature. The intention is to advance to a full partnership by the end of 2016. Currently AVITALISTM is undergoing ship board testing IMO type approval and USCG land-based testing.

Maersk Line Gets New Head in China

Maersk Line on May 21 announced that Mike Fang become the company's new chief of east - and central China. He joins with effect from 1 July 2015. Fang has been head of Maersk Line North China since 2012. He replaces David Williams, who will become the new CEO of Safmarine. IHS Maritime 360 quoted Tim Smith, CEO of Maersk Line North Asia as saying that Mike had been appointed head of the organization in eastern and central China. Tim said that Mike with his expertise in local market and extensive experience would provide great value to the organization in eastern and central China. Fang started in Maersk Line as a sales representative in 1994. In the last 21 years, he has been head of the department and Shenzhen sales manager for eastern China in Maersk Line.

MCC Rolls Out Direct China-Myanmar Shipping Service

The first direct shipping route between Myanmar and China, IA5 (Intra Asia 5) was launched in Yangon, by Maersk Line and MCC Transport. Sources said that the Tokyo Trader, the first vessel to do direct shipping service has already left Shanghai on January 27 and is expected to arrive in Myanmar port city of Yangon on Februaty 9 at Yangon International Port. It will run with eight vessels (1100 TEU), docking every week at Myanmar International Port. Industry leaders said this new service will cut shipment time to about six days compare to 18 days in the past, saying that even the first resection is positive, and there are prospects of growth in the future.

MTU Powers Fleet of Inland Waterway Towboats

Installing new MTU engines has improved Southern Towing’s fuel consumption and maneuverability.

U.S. Polar Vortex Gives Boost to Cruise Sector

The freezing weather that swept the United States in the first two months of the year led to a surge in cruise bookings as winter-weary holidaymakers headed south to warmer climes. "Many companies have recorded their best booking month ever in January," Christine Duffy, head of trade group Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), told Reuters at the ITB travel trade fair in Berlin. Large parts of the United States have been gripped by freezing temperatures and snow storms since the start of the year as a series of Arctic weather systems swept the country.
