Coast Guard Foundation's Gift to Station Fort Pierce

At a presentation earlier today the Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and welfare of all Coast Guard members and their families presented a $10,000 gift to Coast Guard Station Fort Pierce, Fort Pierce, Florida. The funds will be used to provide kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and camping and fishing gear for the 45 active duty members and 15 reservists, and their families based at this Coast Guard station. Foundation staff member Brian Overcast and Foundation board member VADM Sally Brice-O’Hara, USCG (Ret.) thanked Dyer Chevrolet and the Dyer family, who made the gift possible through a donation to the Coast Guard Foundation. Change of Watch for Coast Guard Vice Commandant

Vice Adm. Sally Brice-O’Hara was relieved by Vice Adm. John P. Currier as vice commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard during a military change of watch ceremony held here Friday morning at Fort Lesley J. McNair. Brice-O’Hara retired from the Coast Guard after more than 37 years of service as part of the same ceremony. Brice-O’Hara assumed the duties of the 27th vice commandant May 24, 2010. As second in command she was responsible for executing the commandant’s strategic intent, managing internal organizational governance and serving as the component acquisition executive. Coast Guard Publishes Final Action Memo

A damaged hoist cable and the inability to find equipment needed to repair the fraying cable are the two causal factors in the Coast Guard’s unsuccessful rescue of an injured crewmember off the sailing vessel Freefall during heavy weather Oct. 28, 2008, according to a Coast Guard final action memo released Wednesday. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp underwent surgery to treat early stage prostate cancer at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., Monday, after it was diagnosed in a proactive health screening. The Coast Guard’s highest ranking officer is using the situation as a learning opportunity on preventive health for the service’s approximately 57,000 military and civilian employees, 30,000 auxiliary volunteers, their families and retirees. “My early diagnosis is an important reminder of the importance of staying current on health screening,” said Papp.

New USCG Leadership Team

Great Lakes Ocean Policy Public Meeting

Obama Administration officials will hold their sixth regional Ocean Policy Task Force Public Meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 29, 2009. The Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force, led by White House Council on Environmental Quality Chair Nancy Sutley, consists of senior-level officials from Administration agencies, departments, and offices. The Task Force is charged with developing a recommendation for a national policy that ensures protection, maintenance, and restoration of the oceans, our coasts and the Great Lakes. It will also recommend a framework for improved stewardship, and effective coastal and marine spatial planning. Cummings Chairs Subcommittee Hearing on CG SAR

Congressman Elijah E. Cummings will chair a hearing of the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, to review the Coast Guard’s Search and Rescue (SAR) Mission. The hearing will be held Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in the Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2167. Rear Admiral Sally Brice-O’Hara, Deputy Commandant for Operations will represent the Coast Guard during the hearing. Part of Chairman Cummings’ opening statement reads: “The SAR mission is one that the Coast Guard performs on a daily basis and is a mission central to what our Coast Guard is – a service of guardians willing to risk their own lives to save those in peril. DHS Secretary Visits Coast Guard

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano visited Coast Guard Headquarters, on Jan. 22, to receive briefings from the service's senior leaders and to tour the Coast Guard's National Command Center. The Coast Guard was the first component agency of the department Napolitano visited following her swearing-in Wednesday as the department's third secretary. Napolitano was greeted by Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad. W. Allen and honors were rendered by the Coast Guard's Ceremonial Honor Guard.

New Coast Guard Station to be Unveiled

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled Thursday to celebrate the opening of the new Coast Guard Station Oak Island operations building. Crews from Coast Guard Station Oak Island, located in Caswell Beach, N.C., will be opening their doors to a new station after their original station burned down Feb. 1, 2002, for unknown reasons. In the mean time, crews have been conducting operations for more than two years in two doublewide trailers while a new, state-of-the-art facility was constructed on familiar station ground. Since the fire, Station Oak Island has grown larger with the addition of a new 25-foot homeland security response boat and 10 more crewmembers. Coast Guard Crew Recognized for Heroism

Coast Guardsmen from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., are scheduled to be recognized in a ceremony Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. at the air station. The recognition is for the crewmembers' heroism during the Coast Guard’s response to a chemical tanker explosion off the coast of Virginia nearly a year ago. North Carolina Senator Richard Burr and Coast Guard Fifth District Commander, Rear Adm. Sally Brice-O’Hara, are both scheduled to take part in the ceremony. Among the awardees is Petty Officer William (Dave) Foreman, a rescue swimmer who is being awarded the distinguished Coast Guard Medal. The Coast Guard Medal is one of the highest awards in the service.
