European Oil Majors Enter U.S. Offshore Wind Markets
Statoil, Shell, DONG Energy turn to U.S. offshore wind; oil firms bring big budgets, offshore tech and risk experience. Some European oil majors have made inroads into the emerging U.S. offshore wind energy market, aiming to leverage their experience of deepwater development and the crowded offshore wind arena at home. Late entrants to the offshore wind game in Europe, which began with a project off Denmark 25 years ago and is now approaching maturity, they are looking across the Atlantic at what they view as a huge and potentially lucrative new market. Norway's Statoil has won a licence to develop a wind farm of the New York coast, is marketing its new floating turbine to California and Hawaii and is retraining some oil and gas staff to work in its wind division.
Virgina Offshore Wind Project Moves Forward
An offshore wind project in the U.S. mid-Atlantic is moving forward, as project owner Dominion Energy Virginia has signed an agreement and strategic partnership with DONG Energy to build two 6-megawatt turbines 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. DONG Plans World's Largest Offshore Wind Farm
DONG Energy announced today it has decided to construct the 660MW Walney Extension Offshore Wind Farm, located in the Irish Sea, approximately 19 kilometersm off the west coast of Britain. The final investment decision has been made after securing all necessary consents from authorities, completing site assessments and having signed the majority of the contracts for supply and installation to build the project, DONG said. DONG Becomes Lead Developer of UK's Offshore Wind Hornsea Zone
Denmark's DONG Energy has become the lead developer of Britain's Hornsea Zone offshore wind scheme after it bought the project rights to the second and third phases of the development Mainstream Renewable Power and Siemens Financial Services. The Hornsea Zone, off the coast of northeast England, is being developed in phases to ultimately provide 4 gigawatts (GW) of renewable wind energy and has the potential to meet 40 percent of Britain's electricity demand. DONG acquired the first phase of the development, known as Hornsea Project One, earlier this year, which will have a capacity of 1.2 GW.
Dong & Siemens Collaborate on German OWT Projects
DONG Energy & Siemens AG sign up to supply and service a total of 154 offshore wind turbines (OWT) of 6 megawatt each. The agreements give DONG Energy the option to install the turbines on its Gode Wind projects in Germany from 2015. Utilisation of the potential supplies and services under the agreements is subject to official approvals for the specific projects and DONG Energy making a positive investment decision for the projects. Following the acquisition of the ownership interest in the Gode Wind projects in August 2012, DONG Energy invited tenderers for the supply of offshore turbines in accordance with EC tender rules. The agreements signed with Siemens AG are a result of the tender procedure.
