Course Correction for DDG 1000, Navy Will Replace Main Battery for Guided Missile Destroyer

The U.S. Navy’s controversial USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) class of guided missile destroyers raises the legitimate question of whether a ship is too transformational, or not transformational enough.While the Navy Fact File states that DDG 1000 is the “largest and most technologically advanced surface combatant in the world,” it’s a program that has been in existence for many years. It began as the SC-21 (Surface Combatant for the 21st century) research and development program in 1994, which included the “arsenal ship” concept.

USS America Joins the Fleet

USS America (LHA 6), the Navy's newest and most technologically advanced amphibious assault ship, was commissioned during a formal ceremony at Pier 30/32 during San Francisco Fleet Week, Oct. 11. More than 8,000 friends, family members and invited guests gathered in front of the ship to witness its introduction to the fleet. During the ceremony, Adm. Harry B. Harris, commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, commended the crew for their performance during acceptance trials and sailing around South America. He said because conflict and crisis can arise at any time, warships like America will be needed as the nation conducts its strategic rebalance to the Pacific.

Fleet Week Brings 1.5 Million Visitors to San Francisco

Under clear skies and with calm seas, they came by the hundreds of thousands to San Francisco Fleet Week 2010, the largest such gathering in more than twenty years to take place in the City. The USS Makin Island -- known as the Navy's "Green Ship" for its revolutionary hybrid technology came to San Francisco early to showcase its disaster relief capabilities. In addition, five more 3rd Fleet United States Navy ships, plus two from the Canadian Navy, the US Coast Guard Cutter Active and two historic vessels of WWII and Vietnam era vintage made up the annual Parade of Ships. Over the three day weekend, an estimated 1.5 million visitors thronged to the City with more than 24,000 going onboard the ships berthed for tours.

Bonhomme Richard, Pinckney Arrive for San Francisco Fleet Week

More than 1,500 Sailors and Marines aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) and the guided missile destroyer USS Pinckney (DDG 91) arrived in Oct. 12 for the city's annual Fleet Week celebration. Fleet Week San Francisco, held since 1981, is an opportunity for the public to meet their Navy and Marine Corps team. Coast Guard to Enforce Fleet Week Security Zones

Various U.S. Coast Guard units, including elements from the newly commissioned Maritime Safety and Security Teams, will work with local law enforcement agencies to enforce Naval Vessel Protection Zones around military vessels attending San Francisco’s Fleet Week, Oct. 10 to October 15. Naval Vessel Protection Zones require that non-military vessels remain at least 100-yards away from U.S. Naval vessels and operate at a no-wake speed when within 500-yards of a Naval vessel. Violation of the protection zone is a felony offense, punishable by up to six years imprisonment and / or up to $250,000 in fines.
