Moose Boats Wins New Fireboat Order

San Francisco Bay Area shipbuilder Moose Boats announced it has been awarded a contract from the Woodbridge Fire District for the construction of a M3-36 Monohull to serve as a fireboat in California's San Joaquin Delta.The 36-foot-long vessel will feature twin 300-horsepower Mercury outboards and a dedicated fire pump to flow through two monitors at approximately 1,500 gallons per minute. American Cruise Lines Adds California Service

Thirty-Four Foss Vessels Win Safety Awards

The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) presented the Foss vessels with Jones F. Devlin Awards at the Annual Safety Awards Luncheon held this year in New Orleans, Louisiana. The awards are given to self-propelled merchant vessels that have operated for two full years or more without a crew member losing a full turn at watch because of an occupational injury. Altogether, the Foss ships achieved the equivalent of 144 years without a lost-time injury. NYMH Executes Purchase Contract

NYMET Holdings Inc. (PINKSHEETS: NYMH), a metals and mining company headquartered in Port Jefferson, N.Y., announced the successful execution of a Lease Purchase Contract to acquire a marine salvage and storage facility located in Stockton, Calif. The acquisition, which includes two waterfront parcels, as well as riparian rights, provides NYMET a strategic location to expand their Marine Salvage Division for scrap metal recovery. The property, located on the waterfront of the San Joaquin River, in Stockton, Calif. will provide NYMET the ability to process and transport scrap metal derived from the salvage and ship breaking opportunities available on the west coast of North America. The facility provides access to the Delta waterway as well as the ability to park salvage barges.

San Francisco Bay – RNA for LHG carriers

The U.S. Coast Guard has designated waters of San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay, Carquinez Strait, Suisun Bay, Sacramento River, San Joaquin River and connecting waters as a regulated navigation area (RNA) for the purpose of prohibiting vessels carrying liquefied hazardous gas (LHG) from anchoring in these waters and requiring such vessels to proceed directly to their intended offload facility. The rule comes into effect on June 28. 69 Fed. Reg. 30203 (HK Law).

Obituary: Josip Gruzling, Nozzle Expert, 1943-2007

Josip Gruzling, P.Eng., President of NautiCAN R&D Ltd., passed away Monday, September 10. Josip was a pioneer in the use of hydrofoils to increase the efficiency of tugs and barges. He used his inventiveness and determination to develop two types of devices: the High Efficiency Nozzles and Hydralift Skegs for barges, receiving nine patents for his efforts. Over 100 High Efficiency Nozzles have been built and over 40 Hydralift skegs have been installed worldwide. Josip got his start in 1968 working for Robert Allan Ltd., going on to found NautiCAN in 1972 to develop his ideas. Hydralift Skegs provide directional stability to barges with much less resistance than standard skegs, typically between a 35 to 50% improvement.

Coast Guard Investigates Grounding of Bulk Carrier

U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco is investigating the grounding of the 602-ft. Norweigan bulk carrier SPAR LYRA in the San Joaquin River. The SPAR LYRA was fully-loaded with petroleum coke when it broke free from its moorings at the Pittsburg Tesoro Refinery pier. The vessel is now soft aground on Brown's Island in New York Slough of the San Joaquin River. There has been no pollution and the vessel's fuel tanks are being constantly monitored for signs of discharge. With tugboats alongside to assist maneuvering, the SPAR LYRA will attempt to refloat and then moor again at the Pittsburg Tesoro pier. A Coast Guard captain of the port order has been issued to the SPAR LYRA, requiring an underwater hull survey.

Crowley's Energy and Marine services group coordinated and managed the refloat of the grounded MV Cefalonia. Stockton, Cal. on the San Joaquin River. incident to Stockton, CA under tug assist. to the port. services in order to extract the vessel from her grounded position. said Chris Peterson, General Manager Contract Services. from 2,000 to 6,250 BHP. and Health, Safety and Environmental representative to work on scene. States Coast Guard. vessel was sound, with no known damage to the hull. deployment boat were on standby in the immediate area as a precaution.

Repowering and Niche Marketing at Westar

Fireworks exploded over the Bay Bridge and thousands of people crowding the waterfront near the new ballpark gasped in admiration. Some of the best seats for the spectacle are along the north side of Pier 50, home of Westar Marine Services where owner's and employees share a barbecue in honor of the annual display sponsored by a local radio station. But the folks at Westar are more than passive observers, the tugs that are managing the fireworks barges are contracted from Westar. This annual fireworks event sums up Westar Marine Services' role on San Francisco Bay. They are the company that takes on all of the niche jobs that others with their large investments in big horsepower and Z-drives can't afford to be doing.
