Sunken Fishing Vessel Spilling Oil Off San Juan Island
A commercial fishing vessel that sank Saturday near San Juan Island, Wash. is spilling oil, the U.S. Coast Guard said.All five crewmembers from the sinking Aleutian Isle were rescued by a Good Samaritan, and no injuries have been reported.The 49-foot vessel sank with approximately 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel and a combined 100 gallons of hydraulic fluid and lubricant oil aboard, according to the Coast Guard. A sheen has been observed spanning more than two miles and was reported to have entered Canadian waters as the vessel continues to release small amounts of diesel.At approximately 2 p.m.
USCG Suspend Search for Crabber Near Anacortes, Wash.
The Coast Guard has suspended the search for a crabber reported overdue near Anacortes, Wednesday. Dean Harvey, 48, of Bremerton, remains missing. Search crews spent 24 hours completing a total of 24 searches that covered a 909 square mile area with no signs of Harvey. “Suspending the search for a missing person is one of the most difficult decisions we must make,” said Cmdr. Brian Meier, chief of response for Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound. “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Mr. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles located an overturned and aground vessel reportedly matching the description of Harvey’s near the southeast corner of Lopez Island around 9 a.m. The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Adelie towed the vessel to shore.
Public Invited to Join Last Sailings of Veteran WSF Ferry
The public is invited to bid “bon voyage” to Washington State Ferries’ (WSF) oldest ship, the 87-car 'Evergreen State', with one last ride from Friday Harbor to Anacortes Sunday, June 29, 2014. Crews will decommission the vessel and retire it from service following this final sailing. The Evergreen State was the first vessel custom built for Washington State Ferries in 1954.“This remarkable ferry has served our customers well for six decades,” said Interim Assistant Secretary for Ferries Division Capt. George Capacci. In the recent past she plied the waters of San Juan County between Anacortes and Sidney B.C. The ferry currently serves the interisland route.
Coast Guard, Canadian Naval Vessels Continue Search
U.S. Coast Guard and Canadian Navy vessels continue to work towards finding an airplane, which crash-landed Saturday night, and the young passenger who is still missing. The plane crashed in the vicinity of President Channel, on the west end of Orcas Island. A Canadian Navy vessel, with side-scan sonar, arrived last night and continues to search for the submurged plane. A second Canadian Navy vessel has equipment and dive personnel that can submerge to depths of 300 feet. The goals of the responding agencies are to locate the plane and verify if the young passenger is still on board. Coast Guard units remain in the area in case the fourth passenger is not in the plane. The cause of the plane crash is under investigation by the NTSB and FAA.
