GLM Results Strong in Face of Weakening Market

Global Marine Inc. reported net income for the quarter ended September 30, 2001 was $62.1 million, or $0.34 per diluted share, on revenues of $314 million. For the corresponding 2000 quarter, the company reported net income of $32.3 million, or $0.18 per diluted share, on revenues of $272 million. $1.03 per diluted share, on revenues of $965 million. million, or $0.12 per diluted share, on the second quarter 2001 sale of a special-purpose rig. This compares to net income of $73.0 million, or $0.41 per diluted share, on revenues of $707 million for the nine months ended September 30, 2000. SembCorp Lands Dual Rig Contract

SembCorp Marine Ltd, a subsidiary of SembCorp Industries Ltd said on Wednesday it had secured two rig contracts from Santa Fe International Corporation worth about $570 million. SembCorp said that its associated company PPL Shipyard Pte Ltd would construct two deepwater semisubmersible drilling rigs plus options for two additional drilling units. The first two rigs will cost approximately $285 million each, with the option rigs priced slightly higher. Construction of the first rig will commence in May and take approximately 30 months to complete. The second rig is expected to commence 18 months into the construction of the first, and is scheduled to be completed in 24 months.

Global Marine and Santa Fe International Corporation Complete Merger Of Equals

Houston-based GlobalSantaFe Corporation announced that Global Marine Inc. and Santa Fe International Corporation completed their merger of equals. The ordinary shares of GlobalSantaFe will begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange on November 21, 2001, under the symbol "GSF". Global Marine and Santa Fe International shareholders approved the merger during separate shareholder meetings held earlier today. into 0.665 of an ordinary share of GlobalSantaFe. ordinary shares will trade as GlobalSantaFe ordinary shares. The combined company will have approximately 233 million shares outstanding. "This merger of two great companies creates the world's premier drilling contractor," GlobalSantaFe chairman, Robert E. GlobalSantaFe Reports 4Q and Full Year Results

Houston-based worldwide drilling contractor GlobalSantaFe Corporation reported net income for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2001, of $11.7 million, or $0.07 per diluted share, on revenues of $384 million, as compared to net income of $40.9 million, or $0.34 per diluted share, on revenues of $332 million for the same quarter in 2000. For the year ended Dec. 31, 2001, the company reported net income of $198.8 million, or $1.50 per diluted share, on revenues of $1.3 billion. GlobalSantaFe Reports 1Q Results

GlobalSantaFe Corporation reported net income for the quarter ended March 31, 2002, of $77.1 million, or $0.33 per diluted share, on revenues of $464.0 million. This compares to net income of $40.7 million, or $0.34 per diluted share, on revenues of $274.8 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2001. $8.8 Million Grants SembCorp 50 Percent Of PPL

SembCorp Marine Ltd (SCM), Singapore's largest ship repairer, said on Monday it acquired a 50 percent stake in Singapore-based PPL Shipyard Pte Ltd for S$16 million ($8.8 million). The purchase would be financed through internal funds, it said in statement to the Singapore Exchange. PPL is involved in the oil rig, vessel construction and steel fabrication businesses. It recently secured a contract for the construction of two jack-up drilling rigs, worth $125 million each, from Santa Fe International Corp. "PPL has established a strong track record in rig buildings and our acquisition will give us a foothold in this business," a company official said. The acquisition was not expected to have a material impact on the earnings and net tangible assets of SCM.

GlobalSantaFe Announces Senior Management Change

GlobalSantaFe Corporation reported that executive vice president of finance and Administration Seals McCarty has elected to take early retirement from the company and will pursue other interests after a long and successful tenure with the organization. Effective immediately, chief financial wfficer Matt Ralls will report directly to President and Chief Executive Officer Sted Garber. McCarty's position will not be filled. McCarty, 56, was named to his current position, which included oversight of the company's finance, human resources, procurement and information technology departments, following the merger that formed GlobalSantaFe in November 2001. Prior to his recent position, McCarty was chief financial officer of Santa Fe International Corporation.

ABN AMRO Raises 2001 Earnings Estimates For Offshore Drillers

ABN AMRO raised its 2001 earnings estimates for several offshore drillers and said the oil service industry was in the early stages of a multiyear growth phase. "We are raising our 2000 and 2001 upstream capital spending growth estimates,'' analyst Asit Sen said in a research note. "We note that our views are above the latest consensus expectations. To reflect higher-than-previously expected day rates/utilization rates, we are also raising our 2001 earnings estimates and price targets," he said. "We believe that the sector is in the early stages of a multiyear growth phase. Accordingly, we would use any periods of significant near-term weakness as buying opportunities," he added.

ABB lands $42M contract with Santa Fe Intl.

ABB, the leading innovator in podded propulsion systems, has struck a landmark deal to supply its new compact podded propulsion system on a semi-submersible drilling rig. Santa Fe International Corp. has awarded a $42 million contract to ABB in Norway for the supply of electric propulsion systems and power plants to two new semi-submersible drilling rigs. In addition, the contract includes an option for a further two rigs. The two new deepwater rigs, of Friede & Goldman ExD design, will be built by PPL Shipyard PTE Ltd. of Singapore with delivery of the first rig scheduled for late 2003. GLM, Santa Fe International Announce $6 Billion Merger

The course of corporate consolidation within the already tight offshore business took a dramatic turn over the holiday weekend, as Global Marine Inc. and Santa Fe International Corporation entered into a definitive agreement to merge in a stock-for-stock transaction that will create the world's second largest offshore drilling contractor. The new company, which will be named GlobalSantaFe Corporation, will be headquartered in Houston and will trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "GSF". Based on Santa Fe's closing stock price on Friday, August 31, GlobalSantaFe would have a market value of approximately $6 billion.

Offshore Stocks Flying High As Boom Nears

It appears that the long awaited, much antipated and greatly debated offshore boom part II is prepared to launch again, as offshore drilling stocks surged on Thursday as U.S. crude oil prices hit a fresh nine-year high of $32.15 a barrel, fueling a second day of strong gains on Wall Street for the oilfield services sector. Drilling stocks across the board were flying high, some posting high single and low double digit gains for the day. At mid-day R&B Falcon Corp. was 1-1/2 higher at 18-1/8 and Santa Fe International Corp. was up 3 at 32-15/16 -- gains of roughly 9 and 10 percent respectively. Offshore Market 2000: In like a lamb, out like a lion?

Though fraught with traditional starts and stops, peaks and valleys, it appears now the much-anticipated Gulf of Mexico offshore business rebound is imminent. Maybe. Much of the uncertainty surrounding the upswing of offshore activity in the Gulf of Mexico region closely parallels the unpredictable dips and turns of the price per barrel of oil itself. While those in the industry and the financial community are hardly prepared to declare the oil market free from its cyclical shackles, there has been mounting evidence that those who most directly control the market - i.e. OPEC leaders - are more determined than ever to ensure stability is the hallmark of the new millennium's oil market.
