IMO Suggest Fund to Help Ships in Distress

An international fund is urgently needed in order to establish search and rescue (SAR) services along the African coastlines, including the setting up of up to five regional Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres (MRCCs) and 26 Maritime Rescue Sub-Centres (MRSCs), the IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) has agreed. MSC Chairman Mr. Tom Allan (United Kingdom) said the Committee would recommend to the IMO Council, which meets in June, that an international SAR Fund is established as soon as possible to support the establishment and continued maintenance of the MRCCs and MRSCs in Africa. IMO Waves the Flag about Shipping

It is time to promote the image of shipping, IMO Secretary-General Mr. Efthimios Mitropoulos said on Monday (21 June), as he received on behalf of IMO the gift of a replica model of the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship from the International Council of Cruise Lines and their members Cunard and Carnival Cruise Lines. Referring to the Queen Mary 2 as a "a symbol for all that is excellent in shipping today", Mr. Mr. "I, therefore, believe that the time has come for us to work together, more systematically than ever before, to make politicians and the public aware of the credit shipping rightly deserves," Mr. Mitropoulos said. Maritime Rescue, Piracy Top Agenda

The commissioning of a regional maritime rescue co-ordination centre as well as meetings with the Presidents of both Kenya and Tanzania were among highlights of a recent mission to Africa by IMO Secretary-General Efthimios E. Mitropoulos. Mr. Mitropoulos began a busy three days (3 to 6 May) of meetings with a visit to the President of Kenya, His Excellency Mr. Mwai Kibaki in the capital, Nairobi. Th e two discussed matters of mutual interest, in particular arrangements for the diplomatic conference to adopt a new international convention on wreck removal which Kenya is to host on IMO’s behalf next year. Mr. Mitropoulos then travelled to Mombasa, where he first visited the Mission to Seafarers.
