BMT CEO Sarah Kenny is Maritime UK Vice Chair
Maritime UK has confirmed the appointment of Sarah Kenny as Vice Chair. Kenny is CEO at BMT Global.Maritime UK is the sector’s umbrella body, bringing together the shipping, ports, services, engineering and leisure marine industries to drive growth by promoting the sector, influencing government and fostering collaboration. The sector supports just under 1 million jobs and contributes around GBP40bn to GDP.Kenny will start her two-year terms on 1 December. Current Chair, David Dingle has served since 2015.Dingle, the Carnival UK Chair, announced the appointments at Maritime UK’s ‘Maritime Masters’ reception at Clarksons Platou this afternoon (Thursday), which was attended by HRH The Princess Royal, Maritime UK’s Patron.
Kenny to Take the BMT Helm
When BMT Group Ltd (BMT) current CEO Peter French retires in September, he will be succeeded by Sarah Kenny, who joins BMT on August 1. “Sarah is well qualified to take on this role," said BMT’s Chairman, Sir John Hood. "She is ambitious for BMT and her extensive background in the marine and defence industries means she is ideally positioned to ensure that BMT’s research and development roots are cultivated and innovation nurtured. Kenny comes from QinetiQ where most recently she established and led the Maritime, Land & Weapons business as Managing Director, reporting to the Group CEO.

Former Vice-Admiral and Commander-in-chief of the German Navy Hans-Joachim Stricker, President of the German Maritime Institute (DMI), believes that in terms of security the industry is headed in the right direction. But challenges remain. Safety First: Shipping is no exception. Keeping people and property out of harm's way not only means complying with onboard technical safety regulations, training ship crews and providing rescue equipment. It also means addressing external threats from terrorism and piracy, which continue to be a major challenge for shipping.
Security at Sea on Agenda at Upcoming SMM Hamburg
At the forthcoming SMM maritime trade fair in Hamburg in September 2014 experts will present new security concepts for sea routes. Security at sea is improving: In recent months, pirate attacks on commercial ships have been repelled successfully with increasing frequency. One of the reasons is the EU-led Operation Atalanta providing military protection in the Gulf of Aden. Since 1, February 2009 commercial ships have been able to use a Transit Corridor established there. International naval units escort containerships or gas tankers through this corridor.
